Five years ago, he was taken in the 22nd round by the Reds. • Article and Photos by Joe Snyder Patrick Valenzuela is coaching two teams in the Lawndale Parks and Recreation Summer Basketball Leagues. He had the task of coaching in two consecutive games last Saturday at the Diane Bolinger Gymnasium, located on the campus of Will Rogers Middle School. He split those two contests. In the first game with the 11-12-year-old division Green Ballers, he and his kids were victorious in a thrilling 33-32 contest over the Cavaliers. His next, though, was with the Polar Bears in the 13-and-14- year-old division but they were faced with the task of taking on the unbeaten Thunder. The Thunder proved overwhelming to the Polar Bears as his squad was soundly defeated 56-28. His Green Ballers had control of most of the contest. They once led 27-12, midway in the third quarter before the Cavaliers woke up. They went on a 20-4 run to lead 32-31 when Jaelin Brown rebounded a missed free throw and tossed up a basket with eight seconds left in the game. Six seconds later, Trene Jimmeson was fouled. He converted on both ends of a one-and-one free throw to give the Green Ballers back the lead. They were able painting to shut down the Cavaliers from there holding on for the victory. They improved to 2-1, while the Cavaliers fell to 1-2 in Lawndale Summer League play. The Polar Bears started out playing with them, at first, but by the second quarter, the Thunder just proved overwhelming.
