August 4, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings From City Clerk Norb Huber “Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort.” - franklin d. roosevelt Positive Events This past week I was involved with a couple of real positive events right here in Hawthorne. Can anything really positive happen in Hawthorne? Sure they can. Last Saturday the Ramona Neighborhood Association held their annual picnic. The weather cooperated, the attendance was a record, the food went fast, the wading pool full of kids was great, the music was a little low and was drowned out by the noise of kids and adults having fun. The RNA board and chairman Bill Meyers need to be commended for organizing, promoting and running such a good, neighbor-building event. The volunteer students from Hawthorne Math and Science Academy were very helpful to me as I supplied the tables and chairs for the event. As a Ramona homeowner for the past 37 years, I have to say that it’s been a great place to raise my kids and now my grandkids. The second great event was held on Tuesday night over at the civic center. The HPD community affairs department and Chris Cognac were responsible for the organization of the annual gathering of residents to celebrate our safe city. Some of the citizens of Hawthorne who knew about the event came out to say thank you to our men and women in blue. The police know that a overwhelming percentage of our neighbors here support them, but it’s good for them to hear that in person from a real live person. I tend to think that our law enforcement people need more support, more respect, more backing from our elected officials from Washington DC down to Eucalyptus Avenue where my family resides. The question I ask when voting is who is best at keeping my family safe. I just want a peaceful place to relax at and have a nice cold one after a long day of work and volunteering. I don’t need much more than that. The Pope and YoutH I’m a Lutheran. Yes, that means I’m a Christian/Lutheran. We don’t worship or follow Martin Luther, we follow Christ. 2017 will mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. It has been that long ago that the young monk Martin wishing to reform the Roman Catholic Church nailed a list of 95 debate points on a church door that he wanted the church’s leaders to discuss. When the Pope and the church’s hierarchy refused, the Protestant movement rolled on and the Christian church worldwide was never to been the same. With that said, the Pope still today commands a large audience. He speaks for the largest church body in the world. Recently, Pope Francis spoke to a large gathering of youth at the World Youth Day event. His message really hit me as being timely and important. Stop being “couch potatoes”. Get out there and make a difference in your world. He shared this message: “Remain steadfast in the journey of faith, with firm hope in the Lord. This is the secret of our journey! He gives us the courage to swim against the tide,” Francis told the youth to “pay attention,” because while going against the current is good for the heart, “we need courage to swim against the tide. Jesus gives us this courage! ”With Jesus “we can do great things,” he said, and encouraged the youth to commit themselves to great and important ideals. “We Christians were not chosen by the Lord for little things; push onwards toward the highest principles. Stake your lives on noble ideals,”. During my 39 years of teaching mostly high school students, I see that today’s youth needs encouragement and direction. We are losing so many our children to low expectations, “do as little as possible to get by” and the government will take care of me mentality. They simply are living in a “cell phone’ world. The last “instant message” is all that matters. We all need to be encouraged. We all need to commit to great and important ideals. We are only here on earth just a short few years. There are things we can do every day to make life better for others. Instead of only thinking of our own gratification, we can use our talents and time to help build up our neighborhoods, our city and our country. I only wish I could convince my students in my classroom to turn off their cell phones and learn these important truths. Summer Vacation There are only about three more weeks left before the kiddos start heading back to the schoolyard. That means I better get away while I can. But where is it cool and safe to travel these days? With our recent heat, it sure sounds nice to travel north. The Olympics in Rio sounds kind of scary. Europe is not as appealing of a travel destination right now. My wife, aka, “my old lady” has set foot in 49 of our 50 states, so, Alaska here we come. I’m sure it will be a “cold one”.
