By Joe Snyder Photos by Joe Snyder St. Mary’s Academy’s girls’ track and field team from Inglewood, like others, was unable to keep up with powerful Oaks Christian High from Westlake Village but the Belles turned in several fine performances to earn them a second place finish in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV Championships last Saturday at Cerritos College. The Lions ran away with the title with 131 points to 44 for runner-up St. Mary’s. Los Angeles Marlborough was third with 39 and Serra of Gardena took fourth at 37. The Belles were led by Alliyah Hale, who won the 300-meter hurdles at 42.91 seconds. The hurdles, in fact, were a big strength for St. Mary’s. Kyra Anderson finished second in the 100 hurdles clocking 14.22, with Jaela Williams of Serra, the Belles’ big Del Rey League track and field rival, in 13.96. Both times were wind aided since the meet was held on a cool and windy day. St. Mary’s had a pair of second place finishes in both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays. The Belles’ 400 relay squad of Anaiah Brown, Aliyah Hale, Briana Shufford and Keshawna Myles placed second behind Oaks Christian, which had the meet’s fastest overall time of 45.75, timing 46.69. In the 1,600 relay, St. Mary’s, that included Hale, Kyra Anderson, Mia Williams and Briana Shufford, also finished second in 3:54.67. The Lions won the race clocking 3:49.4 and the Cavaliers were (3:57.1) were third. Shufford advanced to Friday’s Southern Section Masters (All four divisions combined) Championships at Cerritos College in both relays. “We’re hoping we will do well enough to Animo Opens With Easy Win The Animo-Leadership High baseball team from Inglewood began the CIF-Southern Section Division VII playoffs with a 10-0 win over Einstein Academy from Santa Clarita last Thursday at the Urban Youth Baseball Academy in Compton. The Aztec-Eagles, who are seeded fourth in the playoffs, scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, then blew the game open with six more in the sixth. Pitcher Emilian Gutierrez proved dominant with a one-hitter. He struck out 13 batters and walked only one. Angel Barron started Animo’s scoring with a two-run double. Cesar Rocha went threefor four including a triple in the sixth. Dante Siordia had a key single on a squeeze bunt to drive in a run in the sixth. The win sent the Aztec-Eagles into the second round at the Urban Youth Baseball Academy against Emmanuel Christian last Tuesday. Emmanuel Christian crushed Bethel Christian 21-2 in the first round last Thursday. The Cardinals’ junior Bryant Perkinson, who won Pioneer League championships in the long jump and triple jump on May 6, qualified for the Division II finals at the triple jump. He finished eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, six inches. The Monarchs’ 4x400 team with Darrus Wilson, Jaylin Wright, Aaron Berry and Torry Allen placed ninth in 3:36.34. Neither qualified for the Masters Meet, which begins at 4 p.m. Friday at Cerritos College. St. Mary’s Gets Eliminated St. Mary’s Academy’s softball team from Inglewood was eliminated in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VI playoffs by host Chadwick 16-6 last Thursday in Rolling Hills Estates. The Belles made the playoffs after finishing third, behind champion Long Beach St. Anthony and runner-up Serra, in the Santa Fe League. Hawthorne Softballers Fall in First Round Hawthorne High’s softball team began the CIF-Southern Section Division IV playoffs with a 6-0 win at Gabrielino High on May 19 in San Gabriel that gave the Cougars a ticket to the first round at second seed Dos Pueblos in Goleta (north of Santa Barbara) last Thursday. That’s where Hawthorne ran in premiere pitcher Veronika Galoin who threw a six-inning no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and only two walks. The loss ended the Cougars’ season at 16-8-1. Hawthorne finished third, behind champion Santa Monica and second place El Segundo, in the Ocean League. Against Gabrielino, winning pitcher Alyssa Casillas hurled a complete game five-hitter. She struck out five batters. Keying Hawthorne’s offense was Fa Leilua who went four-for-four with a home run and two runs batted in. St. Mary’s Academy’s Briana Shufford completes the 100-meter dash in eighth place at 12.15 seconds in last Saturday’s CIF-Southern Section Division IV Track and Field Championships. Shufford also keyed the Belles’ 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams to the Southern Section Masters Championships, which will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Cerritos College.
