Community Briefs A Lot to Celebrate This Year By Dick Wyckoff Just a couple weeks ago, there was a big celebration in Library Park where the City decorated a very big tree. Why is this a big deal? Well some research recently discovered that the pine tree was planted by the El Segundo Woman’s Club in 1930. That makes the tree 87 years old. The Woman’s Club with the help from the City decided to decorate the tree as a way of also commemorating El Segundo’s 100th anniversary. With many of the local residents and a nice contingent of current Woman’s Club members in attendance, the tree was lit up and the crowd was wowed by its size and beauty. Local residents, Dick and Jan Wyckoff got to thinking about the year 1930 and thought it would be a nice touch to put their 1930 Model ‘A’ Ford nearby. Research also showed that the car was built at the same time that the tree was planted. Both the tree and the car are doing well after all these years. The picture was taken shortly after the tree lighting and many people commented on the celebration of both 87-year-olds looking so good. Many thanks to the City and the Woman’s Club for making this celebration special for the citizens of El Segundo and for the little Model ‘A’ Ford that could. • “The smell of pine needles, spruce and the smell of a Christmas tree - those to me, are the scents of the holidays.” – Blake Lively See Police Reports, page 13 2017 Herald Publications Best of the Best Awards Breakfast Lunch Dinner happy hour/night spot pizza coffee house chiropractor gym physicaL therapy BarBer shop Beauty shop JeweLry store cLothing store computer store reaLtor - femaLe reaLtor - maLe Mail or bring in your completed entry form by December 30, 2017 at noon to: Herald Publications Attn: Best of the Best 500 Center St. El Segundo, CA 90245 insurance agent Bank Dentist mortuary pharmacy Veterinarian auto repair construction Herald Publications Best of the Best Awards gives the community an opportunity to let their voices be heard.
