Saari, who went on to more glory days at USC, was swimmer whose unusual kicking style propelled him to swim the first sub-17-minute 1,500-meter freestyle race. Overall, he won 17 Amateur Athletic Union swimming titles. Roy Saari’s father Urho Saari was the 1952 and 1964 Olympic water polo team’s coach. He was the Plunge’s first directors and helped guide the Eagles to numerous water polo CIF championships; he was inducted into the CIF-Southern Section’s Hall of Fame in 2008. Each of the water polo members who participated in the Olympics played for Coach Saari at El Segundo high school. Surviving El Segundo Olympic athletes include Keith Erickson (1961) who was a standout baseball player, one of the South Bay’s top tennis players, played 12 years in the NBA and played on the 1964 Olympic volleyball team. Debra Landreth Brown (1974) played on the 1980 Olympic volleyball team. She was the 1977 Player of the Year in collegiate women’s volleyball while at USC and named a recipient of a prestigious 2003 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award. Paul Becskehazy (1967) was one of the top water polo players and swimmers in his senior year. He swam in the Olympics for Brazil’s 1972 team. Dan Brown didn’t end up graduating from ESHS but ended up playing for the ‘64 Olympic water polo team. After leaving ESHS he attended an L.A. City school where he won a City title in swimming. Bill Dornblaser (1951) played an integral part of the 1952 Olympic water polo team. He went on to be a lifeguard for LA County and then opened up a successful hair-cutting salon that his son now operates. “Dorney” won a CIF championship in the backstroke before winning more honors at El Camino College. Charles and Ned McIlroy (1956) played water polo along side their brother Paul in the 1964 Olympics. Charles also participated on the 1960 Olympic team. They are believed to be the only three brothers to play on the same Olympic team. Jim Norris was the ESHS student body president his senior year. He played on the 1952 Olympic water polo team and afterwards played at USC. Later on he was an assistant to Coach Saari while teaching at the high school. Jim Puffer (1968) was an All-American water polo player at ESHS before duplicating those honors at UCLA. He was named as the Olympic team physician for the 1984 and 1988 teams. Dr. Puffer is a nationally recognized renown and currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Board of Family Medicine in Lexington, Kentucky. Bob Saari (1966) led the Eagles to a CIF championship and was a member of the ‘64 Olympic water polo team. Jim Slatton (1965) was the 1972 Olympic water polo team’s goalie. He went on to a successful career in 1964 Water Polo Team. Western States 1955 Championships. real-estate. Jack Spargo (1949) played alongside Dornblaser in the ‘52 games. He continued his water polo playing days at UCLA and later on was an officer in the air force. Pete Stange (1948), also known as “Banger”, was an accomplished swimmer and was on the 1947 CIF championship water polo team. He made the 1952 Olympic team before becoming an accomplished artist. Ralph Whitney (1954) went on to star for El Camino College and made the 1964 Olympic water polo team. He retired from the L.A. County Fire Department before becoming successful in real estate. So there you have it 24 special athletes bound by their passion to compete at the highest level. You’d be hard-pressed to find a city our size, in the country, that has so much sports history. One last bit of trivia, its been said that Jim Thorpe played for a local company here in El Segundo.
