Page 6 September 24, 2015 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Kobe Looks Strong for Curtain Call By Adam Serrao, asixlion@earthlink.net The potential to see Kobe Bryant strong and healthy for one last year looks as if it is certainly in the makings. Anyone who has followed the Lakers or Kobe’s career “Now that the doctors have cleared Kobe for all physical contact and his latest injury of a torn rotator cuff is fully healed, the issue arises of how he will be used this season.” lately definitely knows that the superstar’s body has taken him to hell and back. After experiencing a championship-filled All-Star career for much of his younger years in the NBA, basketball life has become hard for Kobe lately. After recently getting an official clean bill of health for what may be his final season in the league, however, fans of No. 24 may just see one of the greatest players to step foot on the court at his best once again. Think back to when Kobe had his afro. He was a high-flying young stud who made the highlight reel every single night by dunking over someone new. That same Kobe is the one who had epic battles with the Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns and even the Portland Trailblazers to reach the NBA Finals, where he would eventually be crowned a five-time champion. As Kobe has racked up the rings and climbed the all-time scoring list, he has also compiled minutes. Minutes that have left a now 37-year old feeling like a basketball grandpa. 19 years in the league, 1,280 games played and 46,774 minutes of action will do that to a person. Whether you love him or hate him, if there is one thing that we who watch the game know about Kobe, it’s that there is no quit in his body. He’ll play the game until he absolutely just cannot play anymore. That’s why there is speculation surrounding whether or not this upcoming season will actually be his last. After the year ends, his contract is up, but if his clean bill of health has him looking young and spry again, who knows what Bryant will decide. We all know that the Buss family loves him so much that they would sign him to another contract in a heartbeat. Now that the doctors have cleared Kobe for all physical contact and his latest injury of a torn rotator cuff is fully healed, the issue arises of how he will be used this season. Lakers head coach, Byron Scott, says there will be a hard minutes cap on the veteran going into this year. “We’ve got to stick to the guns,” Scott told the Orange County Register. “If we agree on a certain amount of time we’re going to stick to it.” Part of the reason Kobe has dealt with so many injuries in the past couple of years Call Now 800-409-2420 Are You Still Paying Too Much For Your Medications? Eagles Run to Victory and Improve to 3-0 By Gregg McMullin The El Segundo football team has routinely put up big numbers with their pass-happy offenses in past years. That may have changed with the emergence of junior running back Taz Tauaese, who rushed for 323 yards and five touchdowns in the Eagles’ 42-30 win over host Bishop Montgomery. Not since Scippio Stubbs in the 90s and Chris Atmore, who rushed for 318 and 383 yards in back to back games in 2005, had an Eagles running back rushed for 300 yards or more in a game. The Eagles came into the game facing an undefeated Bishop Montgomery team full of experience, pride and vengeance. In the past seven meetings the Knights had dropped six consecutive games, so this was a game they were looking forward to. They used that incentive to take the opening drive of the game 95 yards in 15 plays to take a 7-0 lead. The Eagles responded with a long drive of their own. Senior quarterback Jason Kehl found Landon Sharp open for a 12-yard gain and Tauaese gained another 11 yards on the ground. Then Tauaese took Kehl’s handoff for 58 yards to the Knight’s one-yard line and one play later dove into the end zone to tie the game. That long run by Tauaese would be a premonition of what would be in store for the Knight’s defense the rest of the game. On the next El Segundo possession it took four consecutive Tauaese running plays to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead. This time Tauaese’s 9-yard run was second and third effort and drug two defenders into the end zone with him. Bishop Montgomery’s quarterback Brendan Marafino threw an interception to Isaiah Gray and the Eagles went back to work. Kehl directed the Eagles on a 10 play drive spanning 84 yards. Sophomore tight end Taj Balogun caught a pass for a 21 yard pickup and Tauaese picked up 48 rushing yards on the drive including a one yard dive into the end zone to give the Eagles a 21-7 lead. This had all the makings of another runaway blowout and the Eagles were seemingly in control on both offense and defense. Shaman Moore came up with an interception and nearly returned it for a pick six but was caught at the 4-yard line. Tauaese did the rest on the next play by carrying two defenders into the end zone for a 28-7 lead. Bishop Montgomery responded with a long drive to get into the end zone to make it 28- 14 on Marafino’s keeper from two yards out. With time winding down in the first half time keeping by the game clock was suspect with no time running on rushing plays or tackles inbounds and when the officials were clearly winding the clock. The first half was clearly a test for the Eagles, who were playing without several key players due to injuries. But with the way Tauaese was running the ball and the way the defense was responding the second half looked favorable for the eighth ranked Eagles. What was a concern for Eagle head coach Steve Shevlin was the mounting penalties the Eagles were being assessed. Unsportsmanlike, offsides See Eagles, page 11 See Kobe, page 11
