EL SEGUNDO HERALD September 17, 2015 Page 11 Eagles from page 6 Cantwell’s punt formation and recovered the blocked punt, by Taj Balogun, and went into the end zone to make it 34-0. When Cantwell turned the ball over on downs at the El Segundo 45 yard line there was time for one last play and Kehl and company took advantage of a confused Cantwell secondary. Kehl found CJ Shevlin wide open for a 55 yard touchdown pass. There wasn’t another defender within 15 yards of Shevlin and the junior wide receiver scored as the clock read 0:00 to make it 41-0. The Eagles didn’t do anything to run up the score in the first half. In fact the last play of the half wasn’t designed as TD pass but rather to run a particular play they wanted to work on. The defense broke down badly and the pass went for a score. Cantwell’s offense was so stymied in the first half they didn’t record a first down in the first 24 minutes of play. There was so much scoring in the first quarter it took 45 minutes to play. Eagle head coach Steve Shevlin cleared his bench to start the third quarter. A running clock in the fourth quarter allowed some sanity to a game that wasn’t much of a contest. Cantwell fared no better to start the second half. Carlos Loreto’s punt was taken by Isaiah Gray who returned it 63 yards for another score and a 48-0 lead. Three of Tauaese’s backups both did well with the opportunity. Senior tailback Cameron Hayforth, who picked up 18 yards on four carries and scored on 6-yard dive play. Kyle Freeman rushed seven times for 53 yards including a 32 yard touchdown run to make it 62-6 and Danny McEntee had four carries for 45 yards. Coach Shevlin was happy to get his seventeenth consecutive regular season win dating back to the 2013 season. But he is cautious to say anything that would come back to bite his team. “Cantwell is going through some tough times. They are a well coached team but without the help of feeder programs it can be a challenge,” he said. Shevlin went on to say he doesn’t believe every week will be this easy and will still challenge his team to improve each week. “It’s a long 10 week schedule that gets more and more demanding each week,” he said. The Eagles (2-0) will get an opportunity to see how well they fare against a quality team Friday night when they travel to Bishop Montgomery to take on the eighth ranked Knights (3-0) at 7pm. In the last seven meetings between the two schools El Segundo has won the last six games. It’s no barometer of what to expect other than it should be a great test for each team. The freshman team dropped a heartbreaker 27-20 to St Monica. The Eagles had plenty of opportunities but slippery hands that led to too many dropped passes helped do them in. Still, they played with a sense or urgency against the Mariner’s JV team. The Eagles got in the scoring column in the second quarter when quarterback Mathew Romero ran it in from seven yards out. In the third quarter Matty Ramos’ 3-yard dive gave the Eagles a 20-7 lead. St Monica turned it around by scoring on their next three possessions and then hold off the Eagles on their last possession. Eagles Upcoming Home Schedule The freshman football team entertains North Torrance this afternoon at 3pm. The boys’ water polo team hosts Glendale at 3pm on Tuesday, September 22.
