EL SEGUNDO HERALD September 10, 2015 Page 11 Eagles from page 6 each race. Jackson edged Glynn by a mere eight seconds to finish one-two in this year’s season opener at the El Prado Golf Course in Chino.  Glynn’s  solid work ethic has certainly benefitted this soccer star turned super runner and he’s eager to help his teammates advance out of the CIF prelims. He says his ultimate goals are to help his team reach the CIF finals and challenge for a bid to the state meet.  With the loss of Scott Willis, Nick Ostler and Nolan Sharp to graduation, Coach Bolanos is reloading three key runners with five talented juniors who have varsity experience. Shane Mahon is a speedy junior who transferred from Loyola. He’s been pushing Glynn in workouts and together they make up a strong one-two punch. The other four juniors look to be Harman Kindha, Pierce Nebel, Evan O’Connor and Daniel Gutierrez. Seniors Luke St. Regis, Oliver Chen and Kevin McMullin give the Eagles a deep roster, according to Coach Bolanos.  Garrett Rifkin, just a sophomore, was a phenom as a freshman and his pace this year looks to be as fast as Glynn’s was last year at this same time.  With so much talent and a deep roster to pick from, the boys’ team has a legitimate chance of advancing farther than any other El Segundo team before them has. “If we can stay healthy and continue to work hard, the sky is the limit,” said Bolanos.

This year’s girls’ team has a lot of talent and looks to close the gap and overtake Santa Monica for an Ocean League title. Last season the varsity took second behind Santa Monica but both the JV and freshman teams won Ocean League titles. The girls’ team is led by captain Brianna Harmon, who finished sixth at the Ocean League finals. In her last three meets of 2014 including the CIF prelims Harmon had personal bests each time. The fact there are so many talented runners who have made great strides on improving their pace means depth. Seniors Hannah Curran, Genevieve Johnson and Brenna Yob are returnees and have put in a lot of work this summer and look to make their senior year a memorable and successful campaign. Juniors Marcela Lozano and Lindsey Kartvedt look to push their teammates to greater PRs.  Sophomores Grace Hoffman and Karina Kramer will continue to impress and get faster and faster every day. Kramer is coming off a freshman season that saw her run in four varsity meets including the CIF prelims. Add to the mix with two freshman standouts in Gabby Lee and Nikki Fulcomer and you can see how excited Coach Bolanos is for a team with so much depth. Coach Bolanos believes with so much depth winning an Ocean League title and advancing in the CIF post season and push for a chance at a trip to the state meet is very reachable. Football The Eagles got off to a great start with a convincing 34-14 win over Leuzinger at Olympian Stadium in the season opener for both teams. The offense, behind senior quarterback Jason Kehl, looked solid running the ball as well as passing. On the Eagle’s second possession Kehl directed a 14-play drive that ended with Kehl running the ball in from ten yards out. He also completed 13 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown pass to Shahman Moore; a 32 yard score in the third quarter. Taz Tauase picked up 131 yards rushing on 18 carries and scored on runs of 8, 7 and 9 yards. Cameron Hayforth picked up 36 yards on eight carries to help spell Tauase.  Defensively, the Eagles had their hands full against a vastly improved Leuzinger running game. A defense led by juniors Duncan Papalii, Mark Binder, Peter Amara, Ashton Salt, Billy Brasher and Jake Palmer helped limit the Olympians to 151 yards on the ground. The Eagles’ home opener is set for Friday night at 7pm when they host Cantwell. The Eagles have a three-game winning streak going against the Cardinals who are (0-1) to start the season.  The JV Eagles held on to defeat Leuzinger 20-14. On the second possession of the game the Eagles took advantage of a poor Leuzinger punt and took over at the Olympian 25 yard line. Two plays later sophomore quarterback Brenden Casillas found Tyler Villalobos for a 35 yard touchdown pass. The Olympians tied the game on an interception that was returned 41 yards for TD. With time running down in the second quarter, Casillas found Jason Parnal open for a 66-yard catch and run for a touchdown with one second remaining in the first half.  With the score tied 14-14 late in the fourth quarter sophomore tailback Danny McEntee took the handoff and swept around the right end. With a key block from Adrian Johnson, McEntee found his way for a 26-yard touchdown run and the scoring difference. The Eagles host Torrance today at 5pm in the second game of a double-header.  The freshman team got off to a great start of the season with a resounding 42-26 win over Leuzinger. First year head coach Michael Wagner has his team picking up where former coach, Shawn Green, had them the past several years. They play their home opener today against St. Monica at 3pm in the first game with the JV game following at 5pm. • Danny McEntee looks for running room on his way for the go ahead touchdown. Jason Kehl led the Eagles to a 34-14 win over Leuzinger. Haamid Brooks made the defensive play of the game knocking away a potential touchdown pass.
