Brandlin • Bruce R. Brandlin • Christopher P. Brandlin athleticism to reload the defense.  “It’s hard to replace those guys (Walz, Barone and Garza) but this group can be just as quick and physical,” said Heck. Coach Heck will lean on senior outside linebacker Griffin Martes to lend his experience, leadership and maturity. This will be Martes’ third year but for the most part his first as a starter. “Griffin has a lot of football knowledge and he finds a way to be around the ball,” Heck laminated. Three juniors will play a vital part of the line-backing crew. Ashton Saltz (6’1 215), Billy Brasher (6’ 180) and Mark Binder (5’9” 175) are naturals to play linebacker. With the addition of senior Cameron Hayforth and sophomore Tyler Villalobos the Eagles have depth.  The key to this year’s team could also be the strength of the defense; the secondary. Both Coach Heck and head coach Steve Shevlin believe they just might have one of the top safeties in the South Bay. Shahman Moore (6’1” 165) was an All-Ocean League 1st team selection as a junior. “Shahman could be the best cover safety in the area. He has  outstanding vision and he’s very athletic. He’s getting a lot of attention,” said Shevlin. Taz Tauaese will most likely see action as a cornerback besides being one of the workhorses carrying the ball on offense. Some say he might better on defense than at running back. If that statement holds true Taz could be one of the top players in the area. Alex Rios returns to the football field after taking his junior year off to concentrate on baseball. Rios was a starting cornerback as a sophomore and was regarded as one of the top defensive secondary players on a very talented team. Rios has good speed and will most likely be seen returning punts and kicks. Juniors Jake Palmer, Isaiah Gray, and Haamid Brooks look to fill out the secondary. This will be Palmer’s third year, Gray played on offense last season while this will be Brooks’ first year with the varsity. All three have plenty of speed and football knowledge that could be troubling for the opposing offenses. There are some question marks as the season kicks off Friday night on the road at Leuzinger at 7pm. With essentially nine new starters on offense and nine on defense opposing teams may look past the Eagles. There’s no question that Coach Shevlin will have his high octane offense ready while Coach Heck’s defense looks to be reloaded with talent. The Eagles play their home opener next Friday night at 7pm against Cantwell.  Boys’ Water Polo This years team should be a contender to win a second consecutive Ocean League title with four returning starters. The Eagles will be led by seniors Nick Paz (3rd team all CIF and 1st team all Ocean League), Joe Doucette (1st team all Ocean League), Justin Knoll (goalie), Lukas Frerichs, and Matt Marak. Also returning is sophomore Kyle Crist who will contribute on both ends of the pool as a scorer and is a solid defender. Kelly Reynolds will play a big role as the starting center. The Eagles play their home opener against Glendale Hoover Thursday September 10 at 3pm. • who listen while simultaneously making you feel like everything will be okay. And just like that, you are at peace. So is Scully with his decision, but while we have this one year left, let’s not waste it. If you haven’t listened to Vin Scully lately, get on the television or radio station and do it. It is not only history you will be witnessing, it something much grander than that. You can only imagine that Vin is not big on goodbyes and that he doesn’t want the attention of leaving, so for now, remember him as best you can before the time comes where he will one day be a shadow in that California sun. Until then, however, remember him by his words: “’Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.’ I’m raging against the dying of my career, which has to be around the corner now, but at least for the God-given time that I have left, I’ll be raging.” • Dylan Radke has the quickness and strength for a defensive end. Junior defensive tackle Duncan Papalii could be one of the best in the South Bay.
