There is no other administrator that I have ever worked with that has such command of the classroom. There is really nobody like her in the District--a true educational visionary,” Goler also believes Tedford may ascend to higher positions in education. “You guys are very lucky to have her. She is a rock star.” Tedford is replacing Jaime Mancilla, who held the principal position at El Segundo High for three years before resigning this spring to take a post in the Rancho Palos Verdes Unified School District. Tedford, who started her educational career teaching English at Beverly Hills High in 1995, said she was “pulled in” to administration and began mentoring teachers, which she said “started getting me thinking about ways that I could be of broader service.” She went back to school, achieved her doctorate degree, and made her dissertation in teacher education and technology. She served a quick stint at Malibu High School as an assistant principal in 2008, but was quickly called back to Beverly Hills High, which had a mid-year opening for an assistant principal that would be tasked with running the school’s academic program. She was then promoted to the District office, where she has worked for the last six years serving as Chief Academic Officer. “I sort of missed that step of being a principal,” Tedford said, adding that she felt she had accomplished all she could in her tenure in Beverly Hills and “missed working with kids.” Tedford said she was interested in applying for the El Segundo principal position because “they are doing such innovative work here. There is such a focus on global education, integrating technology in ways that are effective. I wanted to know that I was coming to a place that is innovating, and could I be a part of that---to a place where I could be additive.” El Segundo School Board President Bill Watkins, who has a unique perspective on hires, having been a longtime principal at El Segundo High as well District superintendent, feels that Tedford is eminently qualified for the position. “From the moment I met Dr. Tedford and reviewed her resume and credentials,” he said, “it was clear to me that she has those skills and leadership ability to continue to improve the fine, quality educational program we offer at El Segundo High School. “ Tedford was encouraged to apply for the position when she met with Marisa Janicek, ESUSD Executive Director of Educational Services. Tedford was intrigued to learn, as she looked into the position, the District was looking for candidates with “a really strong instructional background”--which was right in her wheelhouse. Said Janicek about the skill set Tedford brings to the ESUSD: “She is an absolute professional and contributor…a very kind person.” Janicek noted that she wanted to ascertain whether the position would be a good fit for Tedford “because we knew it would be a good fit for the District.” Janicek was impressed with Tedford’s background, as well as curriculum knowledge, and familiarity with the culture of El Segundo. “This is where she wanted to be, which is really a big deal when you are tasked with such a big job,” she said. “She really cares about students and wants to see them succeed at the highest level.” Janicek added that “we have such an incredible staff over there [El Segundo High]” and expects Tedford to do a “fantastic job” supporting the current leadership team. Tedford, who lives in Venice with her husband and their two children, had lived intermittently in El Segundo and was familiar with the culture of the ESUSD. As she is prepping for the August 29 opening day on District campuses, Tedford said, “For me the goal is that kids have a plan when they graduate---whether it is a four-year school, or whether it is something more specifically vocational.” She emphasized that she wants her students to realize that the time to consider their future is long before they toss their graduation caps into the air on an afternoon in mid-June. On her website, Tedford highlights a quote from legendary basketball coach John Wooden, who considered himself an educator first and hoops coach secondarily: “Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It’s the courage that counts.” Said Tedford about that quote: “John Wooden has been such an inspiration to me as an educator.  His ‘pyramid of success’ philosophy illustrates the best in education.  The Wooden quote reflects my desire to model integrity, humility and an attitude of ongoing learning to our school community. We are all learners.” It appears Beverly Hills’ heartfelt loss is El Segundo Unified’s welcome gain. • Visit us online: www.heraldpublications.com DEADLINES OBITUARIES: Monday at noon.
