Julia Chavez and Gabby Benjamin and this had the makings of another successful season. Injuries and close losses resulted in a 12-15 record. The Lady Eagles faced 18 teams that reached the postseason. After an inauspicious 0-5-1 start to the season, the Lady Eagles went 7-4 and were 3-1 in the Ocean League. So with momentum on their side, they faced Culver City after being off a week and the Centaurs delivered El Segundo a blow by defeating them 6-2 in Ocean League play. The Lady Eagles finished in a tie for second place and were sent packing for their first round CIF playoff game to San Luis Obispo. The Tigers, the Pac-8 champions, defeated the Lady Eagles 8-3. The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead before El Segundo scored three runs in the sixth inning to make it 6-3. The Tigers would go on to score two more in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Lady Eagles’ season came to an end. Monique Benjamin led the team with a .409 batting average while Julia Chavez (.381), Katherine Kakuske (.369) and Cierra Kessler (.367) also had great years. Boys Lacrosse El Segundo’s lacrosse team made a statement. After winning a league title a season ago, the Eagles are considered one of the top teams in the South Bay. The team was led Cory Lund, Lukas Roscoe, Daniel Ball, Rory Cochrane and Devin Bonny. One of El Segundo’s biggest wins of the season was against West Ranch. Lund led his team to a nail-biting, 12-11, two-overtime period victory over West Ranch. The non-league win over the Wildcats was important because of potential playoff implications down the road. The Eagles ended up winning their second consecutive league title and finished the regular season 14-2. Their season came to an abrupt end when they fell to Agoura. Boys Volleyball The El Segundo boys volleyball team has quietly built a reputation for being able to compete with the likes of Mira Costa and Redondo. Under the guidance of head coach Anjinho Bacil, the Eagles have won four league titles and two CIF championships. This season, the Eagles were 17-8 overall and were ranked as high as fourth in the CIF Southern Section Division 2. El Segundo faced 16 teams that advanced to the postseason, including Santa Monica that won the Ocean League title and gave the Eagles their only two losses in league play. In the first round of the playoffs, the Eagles swept Crescenta Valley 25-16, 25-18, 25-21. Joe Kelly was at his best in leading the Eagles with 18 kills, while Joe Karrer had 15 kills. The Eagles’ successful season came to an end in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinals against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks. The Knights, the eventual CIF champions, disposed of the Eagles in three games 25-17, 25-22, 25-20. So there you have it--a look back at the 2016-17 high school sports year. It was a great one that athletes and their friends will remember at future reunions for years to come.
