The Eagles’ offense went 68 yards in seven plays to score what may have been the biggest TD of the season. Ashton Saltz rambled for 12 yards to start the drive. Taz Tauaese ended the drive when he was sprung loose for a 31-yard touchdown run with 6:43 left in the game. The Eagles would finish in a three-way tie for the Ocean League crown. Entering the playoffs, the Eagles were beset with adversity that included injuries to key starters. El Segundo faced Canyon (Anaheim) in the first round. The Comanches were the defending CIF champions, but the Eagles played inspiringly and won 17-10. Trailing 10-3 entering the fourth quarter, El Segundo staged a big comeback. Billy Brasher’s 62- yard reception helped set up the winning score on a quarterback keeper by Palmer with less than a minute remaining in the game. The Eagles would fall in the second round to Golden Valley 28-7. Taz Tauaese led the team in rushing for the second straight season with 1,049 yards in 10 games. He had seven consecutive games of rushing for 100 yards or more and scored 16 rushing TDs. Kobe Lagarde and Jake Palmer combined to throw for 2,285 yards and 20 touchdowns. Boys’ Water Polo The Plunge celebrated its 75th birthday last November. It has been home to the Eagles and Olympic water polo teams--and the community and some former athletes paid tribute to the historic building. The Eagles’ water polo success over the past few seasons worked against them. They were rewarded for their winning ways by being placed in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 after advancing to the CIF semifinals in 2015. The Eagles were led this past season by Kyle Crist, Lelly Reynolds, Owen Hale, Ryan Winkler, Nolan Young, freshman sensation Kalan Smith and Brett Quesada in the cage. El Segundo, which won the Ocean League, hosted the first round against Santa Margarita. The Eagles had no answer for Santa Margarita, which placed third in the high-powered Trinity League. The Eagles would fall 14-7 to a team that went on to finish the season on a 10-game win streak including capturing a CIF championship. Girls’ Volleyball After languishing through five consecutive losing campaigns, the Lady Eagles turned it around in 2015 and backed that up with a fantastic season last year. This team was filled with talent and experience starting with seniors Khyrese Cleavland, Raquel Hewitt and Julia Hoffman as well as juniors Alyssa Pearson and Maddie Kurke. The team went 15-9 overall and advanced to the playoffs. In the first round, the Eagles traveled to Palmdale to face Highland--the Golden League champions. El Segundo defeated a Bulldogs team that was 18-5 in four games. In the second round, the Eagles defeated Templeton in four games to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since Sarah Stutzel and Tara Hovland led their team to a 24-6 record. The Lady Eagles fell in three games to Alemany to complete a successful season. With nine players returning this coming season, coach Anjinho Bacil looks to have another successful year. Girls’ Tennis The Lady Eagles finished with a 5-1 Ocean League record to propel the team into the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs. Overall this was one of the program’s best seasons, finishing 12-3 overall and advancing deep into the team playoffs. Senior Kristin Villanueva and freshman Lauren Davis won the Ocean League doubles title. With many key players returning, the team’s recent success should continue this fall. • The Eagles went 10-2 overall and were the top-ranked team at one point. Taz Tauaese rushed for over 1,000 yards for the second consecutive season and scored 42 rushing touchdowns over three seasons.
