EL SEGUNDO HERALD July 9, 2015 Page 3 People Celebration of Life this Saturday, July 11th from 1 to 3 pm at the El Segundo Joslyn Center. Letters By H. Nelson Tracey for CINEMACY A great argument in favor of nonfiction storytelling is that often times the truth is even stranger than anything conjured in fiction. Sundance alum Cartel Land, executive produced by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty), is one such  documentary as it follows two different sides of the undeniably crooked war on drugs in Mexico. The film’s first few minutes show images and situations that seem unbelievable; a mass funeral for an entire group of innocent people who were murdered by the elusive cartels is a harsh reality check of the casualties of this endless war. This also serves as a signal to the  audience that we are in for an education unlike anything we knew before. The cartels are introduced as powerful outsiders and are seldom shown onscreen. Instead, the focus of  the film will be on groups of people who are taking matters into their own Film Review Police Reports Unanswered Financial Questions? According to ESCC the “Richmond Street Improvement Project” is supposed to improve the street and sidewalks, remove and replace the trees, and enhance the available parking in the 100-300 blocks for Downtown businesses. But that is not the whole story, what is ESCC not telling us about their plan? The project will absorb 7 ft. of land from St. Michael’s Church and SMCC - this will cost the church and SMCC an unidentified sum for constructions costs and reduce the outdoor play space for the 55+ neighborhood children cared for by SMCC every day. The project will take several months, and is suggested to add 34-56 new parking spaces, with an estimated cost of $785K-$820K! As such, the homeowners on the 300 block of Richmond St. are strongly against the proposed project. Is it really prudent for the city to spend approximately $800K on a project that will yield so few parking spaces, hurt an established day care facility, and negatively impact a church that has been established in El Segundo for 67 years? We support the city on modifying the 100-200 blocks, as necessary, but ask them to leave the 300 block as is!  This issue will  be on the agenda at the next ESCC meeting Tuesday, July 21st at 7:00, we hope to see you there! – Dana Rivas, on behalf of the parents at St. Michael’s Children’s Center, the residents of the 300 block, and St. Michael’s Church. • See Film Review, page 4
