After trouncing Lunada Bay Little League 16-0 they were defeated by Rolling Hills Little League and then lost an elimination game. The 9-10 year old all-stars scored a 20-0 win over Rolling Hills LL Grey. El Segundo sent three pitchers to the mound and combined to toss a no-hitter in the mercy-rule shortened game. Cole Bernstein, Jake Despain & James Baldino combined to throw the no-hitter for El Segundo. Fourteen runs in the first three innings helped El Segundo to the route. A two-run single by  Carson Brooks and an RBI single by Cruz Ochoa highlighted the first inning. In the second inning an RBI single by Ochoa and an RBI double by Benji Kerin helped fueled another big inning. In the second game El Segundo fell 13-8 to Redondo Beach Red. Benji Kerin  had three RBIs on two hits for El Segundo. He doubled in the third inning and tripled in the fourth inning. Gavin McKinnon and James Baldino kept the El Segundo offense moving with RBI doubles.  Four runs in the top of the fifth helped El Segundo close its deficit to 9-8. An RBI double by Despain, an RBI double by Baldino sparked El Segundo’s rally. Redondo Beach would take advantage of two errors to take a 13-9 lead and El Segundo ended up losing.  El Segundo fell into the loser’s bracket and needs to win out by playing each day through next Tuesday at Perry Park in Redondo Beach. El Segundo Babe Ruth League All-Stars The El Segundo Babe Ruth League All- Star teams have all advanced to the state tournament. The 14-year-old all-stars are hosting the state tournament starting Saturday and running through next Wednesday. The five-team tournament features three leagues who have each won Babe Ruth World Series titles. Brandlin traveled a lot and enjoyed my work, but at a certain point I decided to stick with government.” After nearly five years in San Jose, Demers headed north to further her career. In 2011 as a Tax Auditor for the City of Oakland, she played a key part in improving that municipality’s business tax collection by researching technological improvements for systems and processes. She was involved with the revenue collection strategic plan, several RFPs and system implementations. By that point, Demers was ready to take on a leadership role and earned a promotion in 2013 as a Revenue Operations Supervisor overseeing 14 employees. In that capacity, she assisted in improving customer service delivery for the Parking Assistance Center by adjusting the business model and implementing technology to expedite services and create convenience for the public. She also engaged staff by providing training and career growth motivation. After lengthy stints working with such large cities, Demers jumped at the opportunity to come to El Segundo with its small town elements balanced by a big business component east of Sepulveda. “I am thrilled to be here,” she said. “I used to live close by and for a few years I have been thinking about moving back. I love the small, self-sufficient community, the events, the restaurants, local shops, parks and the beach. Looking at what assets she brings to the table that will help El Segundo move forward, Demers described herself as a team player. “I believe positive attitude and a nice smile should be part of everyone’s and could do well if all the right things come together. El Segundo opens the tournament Saturday against Simi Valley at 3 pm; the winner faces Westchester on Sunday at noon while the loser faces the loser of the Hartwell/ Torrance game on Sunday at 3pm. The Pacific Southwest Regional is being played in Murray, Utah July 25 – July 31, with the World Series set for Westfield, Massachusetts Aug. 11 – Aug. 18. The 15-year-old All-Stars are playing in their four team state tournament at Kendall Field in Torrance starting Friday night against Westchester, the defending World Series champions, at 5 p.m. The Pacific Southwest Regional is in Santa Maria, July 23 – Aug. 1. The World Series is in Williston, North Dakota Aug. 13 – Aug. 20. The 13-year old all-stars will compete locally in their state tournament at the Westchester Babe Ruth League field. This five-team tournament starts Saturday with El Segundo taking on Torrance at 3 p.m. The Pacific Southwest Regional is once again being hosted by Surprise, Arizona July 25 – July 31 while the World Series will be played in Ottumwa, Iowa Aug. 11 – Aug. 18. American Legion Team in Area Playoffs El Segundo’s American Legion baseball team is vying for the top seed in the Area playoffs that start Saturday at Paramount High School. El Segundo and Mira Costa played each other Tuesday night for the right to be the top seed as both teams sat atop the standings. It’s important to note that the top seed would draw the lowest seeded team to start the double-elimination tournament. The top two teams in the tournament will advance to the state tournament in Yountville, California starting in late July. Head coach Billy Traber says his team has maintained its focus and transitioned well with the new coaching staff. With the success of the returning high school players along with the JV players added it has become clear this is not a team that will sneak up on anyone. This talented team has depth at each position and Coach Traber has seen the potential in Sean Emery, Spencer Long, Kobe Estrada, Spencer Long and Nico Celestial as players setting the tone for this team. He says the offense is fun to watch when they’re all hitting the ball so hard. What he really likes is the way the team is having fun and getting better. The family often goes on bike rides together as well as beach walks and outings to the movie theater. And when the job gets a little stressful, what is her favorite outlet to blow off a little steam? “Bowling,” she said, although she was not ready to divulge her average. With her previous background and a great deal to be done as the El Segundo City Council and department heads gather information for the next strategic planning session, Demers has hit the ground running on the new job. “City staff has welcomed me very quickly with lots of support and guidance,” she said. “The community is also great. I have been walking and jogging around town and there’s always someone who stops to talk and get to know me. Everyone is very friendly and happy around here. I have enjoyed great conversations and big laughter when dining in town.
