Brady then got Shawn Kekilian to hit a sharp ground ball to second baseman Ian Michel who flipped to Dornblaser, just ahead of the sliding McMullin, at second base to end the game and put a bow on the Beavers’ championship season. They pounded out eleven hits led by Brady, Slavens and Mydland who each had two hits apiece. So the curtain comes down on the Babe Ruth League season where there were plenty of exciting games, plenty of improvement by players over the concise schedule and plenty of memories. Congratulations to the Beavers on a well-played season. ESLL Makes History For the first time in recent memory and perhaps history of El Segundo Little League, a Major Division and a Minor Division team won the coveted Beach Cup in the same year. The Major Athletics and the Triple-A Giants each went through pool play to win their respective tournaments. The Athletics jumped out to an early lead on Manhattan Beach LL and captured a 12-2 victory in the championship game played at Brett Field. The game was a runaway from the start when the Athletics exerted their will early with eight runs in the first three innings. Cooper Stolnack highlighted a four run third inning with an RBI double scoring Zach Gardiner. In another four-run inning in the fourth inning, it was highlighted by Stolnack’s double, an RBI groundout by Zach Exstrom an RBI double by Nolan Kelly and a walk by Owen Kirsten. The Athletics defense played well behind the pitching of Nolan Kelly who went 1 1/3 innings. Kelly gave up no runs, no hits, no walks and struck out three to pick up the win. In the Minor final, the Giants defeated the Diablos, 19-10 at Premier Field in Manhattan Beach. Throughout the pool play tournament, the Giants had big games from Cole Bernstein, Luc Giroux, Ben Lee and Timmy Klug. This was an especially emotional win for the Giants and in particularly to Timmy Klug. Klug was playing with his teammates less than two weeks after his father’s tragic murder at UCLA. Bill Klug had been a fixture at El Segundo Little League and was an assistant coach with the Giants when tragedy struck. It took the Giants a couple innings to get their offense started. Consecutive six run innings helped break a tight game open led by Bernstein, Giroux, Lee, Klug, Logan Brooks, Benjamin Barnhardt. With the score 14-10 in the fifth inning, the Giants went wild with another five run rally that included a triple by Klug, Preston Engel’s RBI single and Bernstein’s third extra base hit of the game. Congratulations to the Athletics and the Giants on a great way to wrap up the season. The ESLL is hosting the District 36 11-12 year old All-Star tournament starting Saturday and plays Hermosa Beach LL in their first game at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
