EL SEGUNDO HERALD June 18, 2015 Page 3 School Spotlight Obituaries In Loving Memory Gerson Martin Jacobson 11/19/1932 - 06/19/2014 I cried when you passed away I still cry today. Although I loved you dearly I couldn’t make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating Hard working hands at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me he only takes the best. Olga Ruth Benson Born in 1919, Olga passed away on Friday, June 5th in Morro Bay.  She grew up in West Virginia where her family survived the Great Depression and in the 1930s moved west to California.  In 1940 she married Dexter Benson, an aircraft worker, and settled in the small town of El Segundo. The newlyweds purchased land and by 1948 the couple had constructed a second apartment building, and started a family. In the 1950s Olga began her real estate career and by the 1970s became the successful broker-owner of Benson Realty.  Customers expected to meet a blond, fair-skinned Northern European “Olga,” and were always surprised to be greeted with a Southern twanged “Hi Honey” from an attractive, dark-haired woman of Middle-Eastern descent. The same buyers and sellers seemed to always return for Olga’s services, so much so that she sold one home seven different times to seven different buyers during her 55-year career.   Olga thrived in real estate by listing, selling, lending, buying and building residential and commercial properties. She continued until the onset of dementia forced her into retirement at age 82. Today the family properties company operates twenty buildings in five cities. Olga was active in the El Segundo as member and leader of many civic organizations.   In 1980 she ran unsuccessfully for El Segundo City Council.  She was a founding director of First Coastal Bank, now Citizens Business Bank. She was an owner of the El Segundo Herald Newspaper. Olga Benson excelled as a businesswoman during a time when men were more commonly the business achievers.   Olga spent her last nine years in assisted living care for dementia.  She is survived by her son Alex and daughter-in-law Pat of San Luis Obispo, grandsons Ryan of Baltimore and Max of Chicago.  She always enjoyed feeding large groups of friends and family.  To that end, donations are encouraged to the Senior Nutrition Program of San Luis Obispo, 2180 Johnson Ave, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 http://www.snpslo.org • Like Us on Facebook Burkley & Brandlin LLP A T T O R N E Y S A T L A W Living Trusts/Wills, Probate, Employment Law, Personal Injury Trust and Estates Litigation, Business Litigation, Civil Litiga tion 310-540-6000 Lifetime El Segundo Residents *AV Rated (Highest) Martindale - Hubbell / **Certified Specialist Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law, State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization Brian R. ESHS Class of 2015 Graduation By Cece Stewart, rising Junior at ESHS  Various facial expressions could be seen throughout the stands as I looked around at the conglomeration of people during El Segundo High School’s Class of 2015 graduation; expressions ranged from pride, joy, happiness, sadness, and anxiety. Overwhelmingly, the faces were proud, due to their children graduating and beginning a new chapter in their lives, yet, sad, due to the fact that their outstanding children will be leaving: some just leaving childhood, others leaving home for college. The ceremony is held on the football field, and it is festively decorated in blue, white, and gold, a feast for the eyes. It is so joyful and bright. All of this is complemented by girls in white gowns and boys in blue gowns, and everyone has a personally decorated cap highlighting perhaps the college they will go to, or something special about their high school experience. The caps are so special because often a loved one or best friend lovingly decorated the cap for the graduate. The graduation began with the splendor of the arches of flowers; these arches are built and decorated by the juniors (now seniors). In a lovely tradition, the graduating seniors all walk through the flower arches as they approach their seats for the ceremony. The graduates and spectators enjoyed heartfelt speeches, including one from Principal Mancilla and the Valedictorian Speech by Nate Vinzon. Thereafter, the calling of the names of the graduates began. This is the most special part of the graduation ceremony each year at El Segundo High. As each person was called, they walked down the “blue carpet,” all in a unique way. Some would just smile and walk, while others would be yelling out of happiness, while others cried, some dance, each graduate See School Spotlight, page 6
