Page 6 June 16, 2016 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Steve Eno who is relocating his family back east. Coach Eno leaves Traber with a full cupboard loaded with potential and talent. Coach Traber has been an assistant for a number of years and now takes the reigns of a team that reached the CIF quarterfinals this past season. With seven returning starters, the future looks bright for Coach Traber who hopes to continue the legacy of John Stevenson, Craig Cousins, Steve Shevlin and Steve Eno. Coach Traber had a brilliant high school pitching career for the Eagles before attending Loyola Marymount on a scholarship. He was selected sixteenth overall, in the first round of the 2000 Major League amateur draft by the New York Mets. His Major League debut came three years later with the Cleveland Indians where he threw three scoreless innings against the Kansas City Royals. Coach Traber returned to his alma mater this past school year and accepted a full time teaching position. When his good friend Steve Eno informed him of the forthcoming vacancy the two spoke and Coach Traber agreed to take the position. Traber says this is a chance of a lifetime to continue the overall success that came before him. The girls’ soccer program will be going through a transition. With head coach Tony Hobbs stepping down for personal reasons, the girls’ soccer program will be looking for a new head coach. Coach Hobbs had been with the program for years as an assistant and led the lower level squad for a few seasons before taking over for long time coach Juan Mosquera. Coach Hobbs’ coaching record of 41-27-15 is impressive when you stop to consider how many injuries to players he’s had to deal with. He said at the time that it was frustrating not having his full team together and being at 100 percent. The school is actively looking for a new coach. Richard Seigel and Nigel Nootbaar Two former Eagles continue the streak of an El Segundo high school former baseball player playing, coaching or umpiring at the professional level. It all started with George Myatt (class of 1933) signing his first professional contract in the summer of 1933. Eighty-three years later Richard Seigel (class of 2009) is playing for the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League and Nigel Nootbaar (class of 2011) is playing for the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball League. Seigel, who is playing first base, is currently leading his team in doubles and is hitting .308. As for Nootbaar he has found a home with the Saltdogs coming out of the bullpen. He sports a 1-0 record with four strikeouts in three innings and has a 2.45 ERA. You can follow each player if you Google Frontier League or American Association of Independent Professional Baseball League and scroll to each player’s teams. Lizzy Garland Scholarship Award Honors Three The winners of “The 2016 Lizzy Garland Scholarship” awarded annually to the graduating senior(s) from the El Segundo High School Varsity Softball Team have been named. These recipients whose lives are most characterized by those qualities omnipresent in Elizabeth “Lizzy” Garland’s life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and the consummate team player, are Elena Bagues- Wagner, Megan Truesdale and Nayeli Diaz. Bagues-Wagner started the season as a backup catcher but an injury to Diaz gave her the opportunity to shine; she was selected to the All-Ocean League team. Diaz’s injury sidelined her for most of the season but was still recognized as one of the top catcher’s in the South Bay when she was selected to play in the South Bay All-Star game. Truesdale had an incredible season leading the Eagles to an Ocean League title. On the mound, the Whitworth University-bound Truesdale was the Ocean League’s co-MVP and won 14 games with a 0.96 ERA and 125 strikeouts.
