I was unaware of this information before I saw the ad in last week’s El Segundo Herald. Public Safety affects all city residents and businesses, so I am happy this information has been brought to light. – Lisa Halvorson Hosting Needs Help Many of us are aware the Special Olympics World Games 2015 are coming to the southland this July. I think some of us are aware that El Segundo will be a Host Town to 100 athletes in the days leading up to the Games. El Segundo will be welcoming Special Olympics athletes from Uzbekistan, Macedonia and Barbados. These athletes will be spending three days with us in El Segundo, visiting our landmarks, enjoying meals donated A M E S S A G E F R O M Y O U R E L S E G U N D O P U B L I C S A F E T Y P E R S O N N E L : LOCAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE A SHORT LIST OF PRIORITIES. The City has eliminated 15 firefighter positions and shut down a fire engine, which has resulted in delayed response times. Your Police Department has lost 11 officers protecting the community. Mayor Fuentes has publicly admitted that City employees of labor groups have endured the brunt of the recession by conceding millions of dollars in salary and benefits to balance the City’s budget. A survey of our members earlier this year showed that 10 police officers are in the process of testing to transfer to another police department and 4 firefighters have already left to other agencies for job stability and better working conditions. That impacts response times. We cannot keep losing our best police officers and firefighters and expect the same quality of public safety services.” Lisa Abbate, El Segundo Resident “There doesn’t seem to be an urgency, from some key city leaders, to take action to protect the citizens of El Segundo from the increase in crime in our community.  This increase has been seen in a number of the beach cities and is in many ways a result of AB 109 and Proposition 47, which among other things, is returning violent offenders to our city. Public safety needs to be the top priority to return our neighborhood to the safe place it used to be.” Melissa Brankovic, El Segundo Resident “Saving money is good, but a second-rate police and fire department in El Segundo won’t work.” Lori McConnaha, El Segundo Resident from our restaurants and generally learning about life in the U.S.A. Donations, totaling about $30,000, are needed to cover the costs of hosting and housing these athletes. Any amount is appreciated. In fact, donation jars will be placed in many of the Downtown El Segundo stores this week. You are also welcome to bring larger donations directly to Studio Antiques. Your donations are critical to a successful Host Town El Segundo. Other Host Towns are relying upon their city budgets to fill any gap.  This is not the case in El Segundo. The athletes’ Host Town El Segundo experience is being led by a local charity, GotKids? (gotkidscharity.org). Please take a moment and drop your donation at Studio Antiques or any other collection point. If everyone does just a little bit, we can proudly welcome our visiting Special Olympic athletes to El Segundo this summer. – Sally Martin Correction In last week’s Herald, it was erroneously reported in the City Council article that Mayor Pro Tem Carl Jacobson voted against hiring a permanent half-time administrative specialist in the Water Division of the Public Works Department and that the item failed. In fact, Jacobson voted in favor of the hire and the Council passed the item by a 3-2 vote (with Council members Dave Atkinson and Marie Fellhauer also voting yes). We regret the error. • Martha Louise Nivans Visit us online: www.heraldpublications.com Follow Us on Twitter @heraldpub
