This new owner gave just 30 days notice to several businesses in this block of stores to be out. Two of these businesses, Mary Jo’s Hairstyling and Slipt Stitch have been in business for over 30 years and now they have to vacate in just 30 days! There was no option originally to negotiate their rents, or even give them 60 days to move. I understand that they did eventually get a rent offer of nearly twice what they are currently paying, which is not an option for these two small retail businesses. It is too bad to see our retail businesses leave Main Street and especially under these sad circumstances. I do hope that El Segundo residents will stop by to say goodbye to Nelly (owner of Mary Jo’s) and Patricia (owner of Slipt Stitch) and thank them for being a part of El Segundo’s Main Street retail community for such a long time. We hope they are able to relocate to a new and welcoming locale, just as Main Street has been for them. – Kathy Rutledge Every Fifteen Minutes Photos by Marcy Dugan El Segundo High, in partnership with ESPD and Reach Out Against Drugs [ROAD], presented the “Every 15 Minutes” event, which reinforces the dangers of drinking and driving. The program uses students as volunteers in a drunk-driving mock accident which has disastrous consequences. Actors included Chad Pordes, Sam Lee, Anthony Rotolo, Jenny Wilson, and other student volunteers. • Students represent those who are killed every 15 minutes.   Prom at El Segundo High School By Cece Jane Stewart El Segundo High School’s Prom was held this past Saturday night at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, with a theme of “Dancing with the Fishes.” The Prom is a formal dinner-dance held annually for Juniors and Seniors. To start the evening out, all of the Prom-goers went to various household or venues for the tradition of photo taking with dates and friends. Parents snapped photos of the kids in all their splendor. All around El Segundo you could see groups gathering: girls in beautiful dresses, some long, some short, and most girls wore heels, except the smart ones who wore flats. The guys had on suits or tuxedos, with some element to match their dates; everyone looked just lovely. I must say, El Segundo kids clean up nicely! Transportation to the Prom included limos, party buses, and one senior even drove his date in a Porsche. People went with friends in a group of about 10-20 and had a lot of fun on the way to Prom in the fancy modes of transport. Once at Prom, everyone talked to friends as we waited in line to enter. Once inside, you were immediately taken over into the idea that you were under the sea. The aquarium was decorated with fish décor and fake boats, and everything felt like it was under the sea where you could really dance with fishes. There was music, food, tables, and lots of smiles and laughter. Everyone was having so much fun. It was truly a special venue for the event. Upstairs there were fish tanks, and you could see various fish, including seahorses and jellyfish. You could touch the algae, and there were even sea otters, which were utterly adorable. Fish ranged from being very, very tiny to as big as a high school student. The fish were awesome. There were a lot of tanks, and I spent at least an hour at them. Downstairs there were tables and food and a dance floor for those that wanted to dance. In addition to a DJ, there was also a live jazz band, and everyone really seemed to enjoy that. The outside there was a place to pet stingrays and sharks. Many were scared of the sharks, some were not; I enjoyed petting the sharks as they felt very slimy, but also very fun. I pet the Paramedics work on passenger Anthony Rotolo.  Chad Pordes is taken away to be booked after a positive test. The coroner takes the dead student (Jenny Wilson) to the morgue.
