Page 8 June 1, 2017 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Eagles from page 5 In the rematch, with much more on the line, the Eagles would be facing a team that had reached the CIF-SS quarterfinals three consecutive years. The Eagles, which came into the game hitting .368 as a team, could muster just one hit off Walnut starter Jacob Garcia through the first five innings. Garcia allowed only a first inning single and then proceeded to retire the next 13 batters, including five strikeouts, before a sixth inning leadoff walk. It certainly wasn’t a typical day for the Eagles’ bats or the gloves on defense where five errors were made. Spencer Long started for the Eagles and was impressive, but the Mustangs figured out the senior to get base runners.  In the third inning, Walnut took a 2-0 lead when Brandon Godoy reached on an error and advanced to second. That was followed by a sacrifice from Adam Rodriguez to move him to third. Frankie Zamarripa then laid down a perfect suicide squeeze as Godoy came sprinting home for the 1-0 lead. Ruben Hernandez  scored the second run after he singled and eventually came home on an RBI single. In the fourth inning, the Mustangs threatened to break the game wide open. The bases were loaded, but Long pitched his way out of the jam. In the fifth inning, the Mustangs had a failed squeeze bunt attempt. They would however capitalize on two singles and an error to score their third run. Trailing 3-0, the Eagles managed their only run in the seventh inning. Jake Palmer doubled to right-centerfield. Celestial smoked a fly ball to right field that was caught. Spencer Palmer then hammered an RBI single to make it 3-1. With two outs and Emery at first base, Kobe Estrada blistered a line drive. Godoy, who came into the game to relieve Garcia in the sixth inning, threw his glove up to protect his face and caught the screaming line drive to end the game and the Eagles’ season. If the ball gets down, it would have meant the tying runner would have been at first base with the top of the order due up. It was a sad ending to a promising season. The South Bay All Star Baseball and Softball games will be held on Monday and Tuesday June 5 and 6. The girls’ softball game will be played on Monday at Rec Park with the pre-game starting at 6 p.m. El Segundo will be the most represented school in the baseball game on Tuesday at 6 p.m. With the success the Eagles had this season Spencer Palmer, Spencer Long, Kobe Estrada, Jake Palmer, Nico Celestial and Sean Emery will participate. It’s the most an Eagle team has sent to the game in over 20 years. Come out and enjoy these seniors’ last time in an Eagle uniform. Lacrosse All Star Game The first ever Greater Los Angeles Senior All Star lacrosse game was held last Saturday featuring the best players from an estimated 50 programs that make up the local area leagues. El Segundo was represented by seniors Cory Lund and Daniel Ball, who played for the South all stars. Each scored four goals apiece in a 14-7 victory for the South team that included players from powerhouses such as Loyola and Palos Verdes. • Jimmy Galicia threw six strong innings against Troy in the second round of the CIF playoffs. Sean Emery hit a towering 390-foot three-run home run against Troy to give the Eagles a 5-1 lead. Spencer Long slides safely under the tag of Troy catcher Michael O’Neill to score. Spencer Long led the Eagles with 10 wins this season. Jake Palmer doubled and scored the Eagles’ only run in the 3-1 loss to Walnut in the CIF-SS quarterfinals. Cory Lund (left) scored four goals in the first ever Greater Los Angeles Senior All Star lacrosse game.
