Including carry-over monies, Public Works is monitoring about $15 million in capital projects for the current fiscal year (and will oversee roughly $10 million annually in future years). Addressing aging infrastructure is a major component, as crews continue to repair and upgrade water and sewer mains, and repair streets. “It’s vital to improve the condition of the citywide roadway system by rehabilitating our larger arterial roadways,” Berkman said, pointing to recent work on Imperial Highway east of Sepulveda Boulevard which didn’t require City general fund money. Finding funding will be even a huger challenge in the Park Place extension project, now in the environmental impact report preparation phase. With an estimated price tag of $50 million, Berkman and City staff will look to outside sources (grants, Measure R and M) and agencies to help subsidize construction. Another huge project in the works is the El Segundo Aquatics Center on Douglas Street that will also keep Public Works busy. Berkman added that he is also pushing for a facilities needs assessment for all City-owned buildings with the hope to develop a long-range plan.
