Page 8 May 14, 2015 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Eagles from page 5 to the Cardinals. It was the first time, perhaps in five decades, that Lawndale had defeated the Eagles on the diamond. The last known time was in 1965 when Lawndale’s Mickey Swanson outdueled the Eagles’ Kemer Brett 2-0. How coincidental that the Eagle ace in 1965 and the one in 2015 would both be Hunter Lewis looked strong in the Eagles’ 12-2 victory over Lawndale. Eagle first baseman Noah Bergren makes a tag attempt on Lawndale’s Miguel Osorio.  victimized by a rare loss to the Cardinals. Willem Mostert struck out six and scattered just three hits while giving up the first inning run. Playing at Lawndale is no easy feat, as any former Eagle player will tell you. It’s cold, windy and at times plain miserable. For those who can remember Thompson Field here in El Segundo that will give you an indication of playing conditions. It can be a home-field advantage and Lawndale finally took advantage. The Eagles had their opportunities and even left the bases loaded in one inning but couldn’t produce any runs. Jason Kehl, Hunter Lewis and Jackson Stone were the only Eagles that had hits. The Eagles traveled to Santa Monica on Tuesday and host the two-time defending Ocean League champions today at 3:15pm. Both teams enter this week with a 7-1 record so the Eagles need a sweep to claim an outright league championship and most likely being the fourth seeded team in the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs. The playoffs start next Thursday and a league championship would guarantee a first round home game. The annual Alumni Game, that brings together a number of former Eagles displaying their talents, is this Saturday at noon. It’s an entertaining game that pits some of the program’s greatest players to don the Eagle uniform against each other. Former all-League, all-Area, all-CIF and former professional ball players will see what they have left. If it’s anything like the past there will be dazzling defensive plays and eye-popping long balls hit and of course a lot of story telling at The Standard Station afterwards. The frosh/soph Eagles swept four games to improve their overall record to 16-5 and their Ocean League record to 6-0.  They defeated Hawthorne 4-1 behind the strong pitching of Nico Celestial.  Mateo Camano and Vance Watkins with two hits and Jimmy Galicia with two RBI’s led El Segundo’s offense. Ryan Maryoung earned his 6th straight win with a complete game shutout at Lawndale 4-0.  Maryoung, Evan O’Connor and Jake McDonnell each had two hits to lead the attack.    The Eagles pounded Lawndale 13-3 at home.  Jimmy Galicia, Hunter Lynch, and Jared Whitney combined to shut down Lawndale’s hitting.  Camano, O’Connor, Lynch, and Maryoung led a balanced El Segundo offense. The Eagles 10-3 victory over South Torrance avenged a loss in the first game of the season.  Maryoung again led the offense with two hits and four RBI’s. Celestial earned the victory to improve his record to 4-2 on the year.  Boys’ Lacrosse The Eagles won their first ever postseason game against Brentwood 17-12.  Cory Lund, despite playing with a severe case of  the flu, had nine points. Senior midfielder Nolan Roles tallied seven points while Devin Bonney, just a freshman, took command at the face-off spot to secure the win. Lund was sidelined for the second round game against fourth seeded Peninsula. With Lund missing on offense the Panthers dominated for a 13-1 victory that ended the Eagle’s post-season run. “Given how new our program was when we started and where we got to we overachieved”, said Coach Brooks Roscoe. “The boys gave it their all and we’re looking forward to 2016.” So are we, coach, so are we. Girls’ Softball The Lady Eagles defeated Culver City and Hawthorne to run their overall record to 20-6 entering this week. They played Lawndale on Tuesday and assuming El Segundo won, it would setup today’s matchup with Santa Monica for the Ocean League championship. The Vikings haven’t lost a league game in over ten years, Dylan McDonnell awaits Frankie Martinez’s throw to tag out Lawndale’s Joshua Salcido on a steal attempt. spanning some 119 consecutive league wins, so tonight’s 7pm game looms big. The Eagles would need a win to breakup the streak and be crowned co-champs. Get there early this could be the game of the year and a historic moment that you can say you were there for. Eagles in the News Former El Segundo standout Grant Palmer answered the call in the 10th  inning against USC, belting a 2-2 fastball over the left-field fence for a pinch-hit home run as UC Irvine toppled the No. 15 Trojans, 8-5  recently. Palmer has helped the Anteaters to a 30-17 overall record. Former Eagle great Erin Burner was crowned the unanimous BIG EAST Player of the Year after a record-breaking season with the St John’s Red Storm. With the regular-season complete, the senior currently holds the program’s career record in batting average at .360, breaking the former mark of .350, held by Jo Sherlock (2003-06). With 43 career doubles, 42 home runs and 147 RBI, the senior is also on her way to setting new program bests in each of those categories. This season, Burner has set the program’s single-season record in batting average (.450), slugging percentage (.867) and on-base percentage (.556), has tied the program mark with 48 RBI and is close to setting new records in hits (54), doubles (14), home runs (12) and walks (30). Babe Ruth League Sunday is Opening Day for the El Segundo Babe Ruth League. Though there aren’t any special ceremonies planned this will be the league’s 60th year. The ESBRL has won an amazing five World Series championships (1964, 1969, 1974, 2002, 2013) and have advanced to the Babe Ruth World Series three other times (third in 1996, second in 2004 and third in 2012). Come out and enjoy the future of El Segundo high school baseball being played most nights at Stevenson Field. • NBA from page 5 and is expected to win it all this year. Don’t tell that to Tony Allen. He’ll yell that he’s “first team all defense” right in your face. That’s what he’s been doing to the Warriors anyhow. His play has been backing up his shouting as well. A steady dose of size inside with Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph mixed together with smothering defense spearheaded by Allen vaulted the Grizzlies to an early 2-1 series lead over Golden State. Looks like the favorites are in for a long series. Obviously there is no way to look into the future and see how each of these series, or even the entire playoffs in general, will end. What is for sure, however, is that with each passing game, the matchups are getting more and more exciting. Whether you’re rooting for your hometown Clippers, you’re in love with Steph Curry or you just want to see LeBron lose and Pau scoop up another ring, the intrigue is there. With football now clearly in the rearview mirror and baseball still in its infancy, why not give the NBA playoffs a chance? With so many good players and storylines remaining, you may even get hooked on the sport all over again. • Jackson Walz shows off his powerful swing.
