Angel Bins would pay 60 cents per pound with the ultimate purpose of purchasing sound system for ESMS P.E. department. Angel Bins is a for-profit recycling company that helps schools and other charitable organizations raise money through the recycling of shoes, clothing and toys. The students were in a contest to see which class period would bring in the most pairs of shoes. At the end of the contest the ESMS students brought in over 2,400 pairs of shoes. The “Shoe Drive” was a tremendous success; recycling the shoes will help our environment and the proceeds will benefit the Physical & Health Education Department Angel Bins picked up the shoes at El Segundo Middle School. These shoes will then be shipped to third world countries where quality shoes are badly needed and sold at a price most people can afford. At the ESMS Open House a parent, who was a member of the Peace Corps, commented when the shoes were delivered to the country where he worked, the people there were so excited because they literally had no shoes. This was indeed a winwin situation for everyone involved. • Erin Graner and Allie Janicek, both ESMS 6th graders, pose with the bags of shoes collected. Photo by Gregg McMullin.
