After introducing the seniors, the Eagles took it to Hawthorne by scoring eight first-inning runs on their way to a 14-0 win. Spencer Long was nearly unhittable in the five innings he tossed. The senior right-hander gave up one hit and struck out nine. Justin Ostler struck out three in one inning and Jarod Whitney finished up by throwing the seventh inning and striking out the last hitter. Long was not only stellar on the mound, but was also two for three with three RBIs and scored three times. Spencer Palmer and Nico Celestial each hit home runs, while Sean Emery hit his team-leading fourth triple of the season. The Eagles finished their play in the Redondo Tournament with a 6-1 win over West Torrance. Justin Ostler threw a complete game four-hitter, walked one and struck out one to improve to 4-0 on the year. The Eagles, 23-6 overall, played at Santa Monica on Tuesday and host the Vikings tonight at 6 p.m. in the last regular season game. A win would give the Eagles the Ocean League title. Kemer Brett Golf Tournament The main fundraiser for the American Legion Baseball program is set for tomorrow Friday, May 12 at Chester L. Washington golf course. The shotgun start is set for 12:30 p.m., with check-in starting at 11 a.m. It has become an event during which former players, alumni, friends and family enjoy a day on the links. Afterwards the players and their guests rally for an after hacking party at the Old Town Patio for a bash that has become as fun as the golfing during the day. For more information on how you can take part, please contact tournament director Craig Cousins at 310-413-1090. Alumni Game Set for Saturday The annual Alumni baseball game is set for next Saturday, May 13 at Stevenson Field with the game starting at noon. Open to all former players, this game has become another fun day for alumni and friends. For more information, please contact Craig Cousins at 310-413-1090. Softball Team The Eagles’ final push for a playoff spot was this week. They were tied with Culver City with a 6-2 record entering the week with a game against Hawthorne on Monday and their nemesis league-leading Santa Monica last night. With the schedule in favor of Santa Monica, a league title for the Eagles is most likely out of the question. The Lady Eagles played host to North Torrance in their final non-league game and fell apart losing 8-1. The Saxons scored an unearned run in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. The wheels fell off in the fifth inning when the Saxons pushed across five runs on just three hits to take an 8-0 lead. The Lady Eagles’ only run came in the seventh inning when Julia Chavez, who had two of the team’s four hits, smacked an RBI double to score Jade Johnson. El Segundo needed at least a split this week to guarantee an invite to the postseason. The playoff draws will be announced on Sunday morning. • Monique Benjamin has been the ace of the pitching staff this season. Nico Celestial had three hits against Hawthorne, including this home run swing.
