Eagles Fall to Santa Monica in Five Games By Gregg McMullin The El Segundo boys’ volleyball team has quietly built a reputation for a successful program. Under the tutelage of head coach Anjinho Bacil, the Eagles have won four league titles and two CIF championships. This season, the Eagles are 17-8 overall and were ranked as high as fourth in the CIF Southern Section Division 2. In the last match before the playoffs that started Tuesday, the Eagles faced Santa Monica but fell to the Vikings in five games. The Eagles have faced 16 teams this season that have advanced to the postseason. One of those teams was Santa Monica, which ended up sweeping through the Ocean League after defeating the Eagles for the second time 25- 21, 25-23, 22-25, 16-25, 6-15. El Segundo started the match as if it was on a mission. The Eagles wanted a measure of revenge after dropping 25-21, 9-25, 35-33, 19-25, 13-15 to the Vikings the first time the two teams met. Much like in the first meeting when the Eagles held a two games to one advantage, this time El Segundo won the first two games but couldn’t put the Vikings away. In the first game the Eagles jumped out to a 11-5 lead, but Santa Monica crept back into the game and trailed 23-19 before the Eagles rallied for a 25-21 win. In the second game, both teams were full of energy and El Segundo held the lead throughout--albeit by no more than three points. Mike Lynch ended the second game with a powerful hit and the Eagles won 25-23. In the third game Lynch help cut into Santa Monica’s 7-10 lead with another powerful hit. Joe Kelly’s consecutive blocks brought the Eagles to 9-10. Will Lubs gave the Eagles hope for a sweep with a block for an 18-17 lead. Kieran McCarthy’s hit gave El Segundo more hope with a 19-17 lead. But the Eagles couldn’t hold on and fell 22-25. In the fourth game, the Eagles started strong by once again leading 5-1. The Vikings turned the game around and won eight consecutive points. Luke Dallavo’s block halted the Vikings’ run. During a key rally, Dallavo made a dig and McCarthy’s block pulled the Eagles to 8-9. It was the closest the Eagles would come, as they fell 16-25. The fifth game (6- 15) was dominated by Santa Monica. The Eagles started their playoff run Tuesday against Saugus. A win against the Centurions would send the Eagles to the next round against the winner of the Crescenta Valley/ Camarillo match tonight. The quarterfinals are set for Saturday, with the semifinals next Wednesday. Baseball Team Eyes League Crown The Eagles took care of Hawthorne 4-0 and 14-0. In the first game, Jimmy Galicia went the distance in scattering seven hits while striking out seven. The Eagles, who were held to just six hits, scored single runs in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. El Segundo hosted the Cougars on the day it paid tribute to the 10 Eagle seniors on See Eagles, page 8 Chargers Ready to Take Over L.A. By Adam Serrao Now that the Chargers have officially moved to Los Angeles to share a market with the Los Angeles Rams, the team will certainly need to find a way to not only keep their fans from San Diego, but also accumulate fans that live right here in Los Angeles. With the recent release of the NFL schedule coming a few weeks ago, the Chargers got all of the help that they will possibly need. So far, the Rams haven’t done much to steal the hearts of football fans here in L.A. besides simply show up first. If the Chargers can get on the board quickly with a few key wins in some primetime games, they may become the first team to gain loyalty in the race for fame and visibility in Los Angeles. The time that you play and the days that you play on can do a lot for the image of a football team that is looking to gain popularity in a new market. Fortunately for the Chargers, not only did they receive primetime games in the upcoming season, but the Rams simply did not. The Chargers will open the season on Monday night in a game against the Denver Broncos and will play games on New Year’s Eve and Thanksgiving Day this year as they battle against the Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys, respectively. Those games will undoubtedly draw the attention of football fans all across the nation. While the Chargers will be enjoying their lovely schedule, the Rams will be banished to London to play against the Arizona Cardinals and will have only one game to play on a day other than a Sunday when they take on the San Francisco 49ers on a Thursday in what is sure to be nothing short of a snooze-fest. In addition to the advantage that they have in their prime television spots, there is much more allure surrounding the Chargers coming into this year’s regular season as well. Sure, the Rams had all of the buzz when they got to Los Angeles first, but winning just four games in a season with a quarterback that has yet to prove himself has turned down the volume on their attempt to take over L.A. The Chargers, on the other hand, have Philip Rivers. They have Melvin Gordon, who took the league by storm last year, and Keenan Allen, who will try to remain healthy and stay on the field. Not only do they have better players, but they have the better stadium also. That’s not to say that the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum isn’t one of the most historic venues around, but the StubHub Center--while not the best in the looks category or with historical value--will give the league its first truly intimate venue. A stadium that only seats 30,000 people will certainly offer a football experience that fans simply haven’t had before and is sure to tickle the curiosity of fans (and league owners) not only in Los Angeles, but across the league as well. If there is any question as to which team will garner more headlines throughout the regular season, it will be figured out for fact See Chargers, page 17
