EL SEGUNDO HERALD April 28, 2016 Page 3 Community Briefs Henry Kusch, New General Manager of El Segundo Refinery Henry Kusch, formerly General Manager of Chevron’s Escravos Gas-to-Liquids Venture in Nigeria, has assumed the position of Harry Kusch. General Manager of the El Segundo Refinery. Mr. Kusch replaces Frank Semancik who has been appointed Vice President of Chevron’s Complex Process Facilities in San Ramon, California. In his new role, Mr. Kusch will be responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally sound operation of the El Segundo Refinery. Mr. Kusch, a native of Placerville, California, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from University of California, Davis in 1984, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1991, and then immediately began his career with Chevron. During Mr. Kusch’s 25 years with the Corporation, he has held a variety of management positions at Chevron’s refineries in Richmond, California; Pascagoula, Mississippi; and El Segundo, California. Mr. Kusch also served as General Manager of the Supply Optimization Group, Americas in Houston, Texas. Mr. Kusch, and his wife of 29 years, Melinda, have three children, two sons and one daughter. Their oldest daughter, Kate, is a senior at Georgia Tech, and will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. Their middle son, Kevin, is in his junior year at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is also the starting nose tackle on MIT’s football team. The Kusch’s youngest son, Connor, is a senior at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile, Alabama, and will begin the Naval Academy in June. In commenting on his move, Mr. Kusch indicated that, “When the opportunity presented itself for Melinda and me to come back to El Segundo we were absolutely thrilled. We love this community, and we are so excited to once again call it home. We are really looking forward to seeing long-time friends, as well as making new ones. Brandlin On Saturday, April 16th the Recreation and Parks Department in partnership with Scotts and Major League Baseball hosted a free and friendly skills competition for local youth. This was our first year hosting the MLB Pitch Hit & Run local competition event. It was a beautiful Saturday morning in El Segundo filled with fun and excitement for the community. The competition was broken down into three separate events that included Pitching, Hitting and Running. There was four different age divisions that boys and girls could compete in 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 and 13/14 year olds. We had 16 participants in the competition and the winners for each division are as follows: 7/8 Division: Chase Mattoon (All-Around Champion, Hitting, Pitching and Running Champion). 9/10 Division: Benji Kerin (All-Around Champion, Pitching and Running Champion), Reed Abrams (Hitting Champion), Ryan Pilkvist (Hitting Champion) . 11/12 Division: Colby Sotherland (All- Around Champion, Pitching and Running Champion), Matthew Higginbotham (Hitting Champion). 13/14 Division: Cooper Stolnack (All-Around Champion, Hitting and Running Champion) Charlie Hoffman (Pitching Champion) Local Photographer Wins Three Awards The Professional Photographers of California recently named Marcy Dugan from Marcy Dugan Photography in El Segundo as the “Nature Photographer of the Year”, Certified Professional Photographer Award”, “Top 10 Case” (#4) for 2016. Marcy has been a professional photographer for over 22 years and has won numerous awards and accolades. These awards are awarded by the Professional Photographers of California 2016 State Image Competition. In Loving Memory of Martha Ferguson April 3rd, 1947 – April 16th, 2016 Martha Ann Ferguson age 69, passed away on April 16th, 2016. She was the daughter of Edward & Mary Hora and sister of Eddie Hora of El Segundo who have predeceased her. Martha called El Segundo home for most of her life. After earning her Bachelor degree in English from Long Beach State University, she gained her Teaching credential and shortly after began teaching in the Lawndale Elementary School District. Throughout her 39-years as a teacher she taught Kindergarten, 1st, 4th and 5th grades. In addition to her role as an educator she also proudly served as an advocate for teacher’s rights with the California Teachers Association. Having taught over 1000 students in her career, Martha enjoyed keeping in touch with many of her former students encouraging their academic progress to the highest degree. After retiring in 2009, Martha volunteered her time with both Children’s Hospital and Richmond St. Elementary School. She also served on the board for the El Segundo High School Alumni Association. Martha is survived by her son Matthew, daughter-in-law Tran and her grand daughters Madison Kieu & Sydney Kieu that she loved “To the Moon and Back”. A memorial service will be held on Thursday May 5th 11:00 am at Douglas Mortuary, which is located at 500 East Imperial, El Segundo, CA. 90245 with interment to follow at Inglewood Park Cemetery. Kalsbeck Darrell J Kalsbeek, 69,went to the lord peacefully in his home Wednesday, April 13, 2016 in Del Aire, California. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda lee Kalsbeek (Schlegel), daughter and son-in- law Rikki and Michel Bogen, grandson Kamden Bogen. He was preceded in death by his only son Jeffery Lee Kalsbeek. 1975-2009, parents Audrey and Jay Kalsbeek. Darryll was born December 28, 1946 , in Hawthorne, California, he graduated from Hawthorne High school,1964. On August 12, 1972, he married Linda Lee Schlegel, who survives. Darryll was a loving father, husband, grandfather, devoted Christian and friend to all. He was always there to help friends and family with whatever they needed. He enjoyed sports and had a passion for fishing and music he also enjoyed sunsets and reading. He served in Vietnam from 1966-68 as a truck driver during the Vietnam war before devoting the next 40+ years of his life to the industry he loved as deeply as he loved his friends and family. Century Blvd, Inglewood, Ca, 90404. • employed as the administrative assistant for the Pupil Services department, Jennings, a 10-year District employee, is a worker who “exceeds expectations.” Farris also spearheaded the presentation of the four Educators of the Year honorees. Rebecca Wright was selected from Center Street School; Christine Quinn was the choice from Richmond Street School; the Middle School recognized Cheryl Charney; and the selection for Educator of the Year from the High School was Dana Lund. Wright is the music teacher serving at Center Street, and has been working in the education field for 15 years, the past six in the ESUSD. Quinn is working out of the classroom this school-year, filling the position of “Teacher on Special Assignment,” working closely with the teachers as part of the Math Leadership Corp. Currently a counselor at the Middle School, Charney has taught at both Center Street and the Middle School, and has spent two decades working for the District. Biology teacher Lund has spent 31 years as an educator, and has been a member of the High School’s science department since 2003. Emailed Lund: “This is a huge honor, considering the caliber of teachers we have at ESHS.” Quinn emailed that “this District is truly one of a kind. I feel that it is a great honor to work here. I am able to do what I love in working with amazing students, parents and teachers, while also being encouraged to grow as a professional and always reach greater heights in my teaching practices.” Superintendent Melissa Moore next approached the presentation podium to recognize the ASCA selection of Plotkin, who has worked in administration for the District since 2007. Said Moore: “Dr. Jack Plotkin has changed the world for students at El Segundo Middle School.
