Page 12 April 28, 2016 EL SEGUNDO HERALD School Board from page 3 humbled to receive the recognition, and grateful to work with such a solid administrative team, dedicated staff, and highly supportive community.” After student representative Lexi Griffin gave her report about events at the High School, Ed! Foundation CEO Carol Pirsztuk, who was recently voted onto the El Segundo City Council, reported to the Board about upcoming foundation activities, including the always popular Ed! Gala, which will take place at Chevron Park on Friday evening, May 13. With local establishments like Sausal, Mc- Cormick & Shmick’s, Rock & Brews, The Tavern, and Standard Station, among others, providing signature drinks and food dishes, the evening perennially is an opportunity for El Segundo Ed! supporters to enjoy a night out while helping raise money for the ESUSD. Pirsztuk also took note of the foundation’s Summer Academy, which commences on June 13 and will run through July 15. The only discussion item on the Tuesday night agenda at the 80-minute meeting was facilitated by Moore, and centered on the District’s Ed! Foundation request for funding relating to the upcoming 2016-17 school year. She spoke of the programs on the District’s Ed! Foundation support wish list, and the hope that the foundation would be able to raise $1.3 million in their upcoming fundraising campaign, encompassing not only the support of local businesses, but parents and community members who may not currently have students enrolled in the District. The Board next tackled the eleven consent items on the agenda, including the approval of an agreement with the Richmond Street gardening consultant; a three-year contract agreement for auditing services; an agreement for a contract with a consultant who will train District Business Office staff; and a consultant service agreement that will provide the District guidance in moving forward with implementing their IP telephony program. Matt Finkelstein will be providing gardening consultant services to all Richmond Street K-5 classrooms. He is slated to meet with each classroom teacher twice in April through the conclusion of school. He is also contracted to support and advise the school garden committee and administration and provide ongoing garden maintenance. The firm of Christy White Associates will be providing mandated auditing services to the District for the next three years, with the total maximum audit fees to be capped at $30,000 per school-year, according to District-provided notes. Benjamin Joseph, who had served as the District’s senior accountant, has entered into an agreement with the District to provide his consulting services starting in July and running through November, with the cost to the District not to exceed $1,000. Network Solutions (NWS) and the District reached an agreement for NWS to provide their services, providing assistance with IP Telephony (VOIP) implementation. NWS educational technology consulting and project planning development services will include “evaluation criteria, evaluations and recommendations” for the rate of $125 per hour for 160 hours. Action items followed, with the Board declaring the week of May 2-6 as Certificated School Employee (Teacher Appreciation) week; approving new job descriptions for four District positions, including student information systems specialist; High School intervention specialist; accountant; and a substitute theatre technician position. The Board also approved the summer reading lists for the Middle School and the High School. Two information pending action items were on the meeting agenda; with the Board receiving information regarding the El Segundo teacher association’s proposed “successor of collective bargaining agreement.” Item two on the information pending action list was the “Educator Effectiveness Plan.” The District has received a three-year grant of $240,644, and is tasked to develop a plan on how the money will be utilized to support teachers, administrators and paraprofessionals educators to promote educational quality. This item is scheduled to be brought back for the Board’s approval at the May 10 board meeting. Moore then highlighted items on the District’s informational calendar, including two opportunities (May 3 and 12) for community members to have input on the District’s long-range facilities master plan via attending town hall meetings. The next regularly scheduled School Board meeting is set to commence on May 10 at 7 p.m. • School Spotlight from page 6 of someone who is my colleague and has a similar teaching background. With two of us in the classroom, we can have deeper conversations with more students to learn about their mathematical thinking.” With Kim observing and coaching, Sandowicz says she can better anticipate what her students are thinking in the moment, and then ask a set of questions to get them to the final stage of the algorithm. “As teachers, we use our expertise to change course according to the students’ needs.” Results of the intensive teacher mentoring are already apparent. “ Instead of saying to themselves, ‘I hate math,’ kids are seeing themselves as mathematicians,” says Sandowicz. “Their eyes are on fire; they’re excited. They are very engaged and can’t wait to share their learning. They understand that if they have a different understanding of how to solve the problem, then they can solve it the way they’re the most comfortable.” “Through their experience, students can develop their own understanding of concepts being presented,” said Quinn. “What we’re finding is that students depth of understanding is so much richer than before.”As students expand their mathematical thinking, Sandowicz points out, “The journey is more important than the answer.” For more information on the Cotsen Foundation’s “Art of Teaching,” please visit www.cotsen.org. – Provided by ESUSD • Visit us online: www.heraldpublications.com PUBLIC NOTICES NOTICE INVITING SEALED BIDS A smile is the universal welcome.
