Page 2 April 23, 2015 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Ellen Allstead Avak Jeri Morgan Ellen Allstead Avak passed away peacefully in her sleep on 14 April 2015 at age 99. She was born in Alameda, CA, on 13 February 1916, and graduated from Alameda High in 1933. She married Ara Avak in 1953. They then moved to Inglewood, CA, where they had two children. They found their final home in El Segundo in 1966 where she continued to live until her passing. Ellen loved her family and friends, folk dancing, ragtime music, travelling with her husband, reading, performances at Old Town Music Hall and her grandchildren. Ellen was predeceased by her brother Robert Allstead. She is survived by her husband Ara, her children Tony Avak and Susan Richardson (Patrick), her sister Jean Rush, her grandchildren Robin and Eric Richardson, and her sisters-in-law Lydia Avak, Marena Larson (Jack), and Aida McBride. A memorial service will be held at Old Town Music Hall, 140 Richmond Street, on Friday, 24 April starting at 1:00 PM. All of Ellen’s friends are invited to attend and share their memories. She was a lifelong resident of El Segundo and a proud member of the Eastern Stars. Jeri was born November 21, 1935, to Charles & Virginia Flathers. She attended El Segundo schools. She met & married Robert J Schaeffer on September 30, 1950. Jeri took on the role of being a loving mother and homemaker to her four children, Verda, John, Robert, and Ginny. Her interests included knitting, crocheting, quilting, embroidering, reading, Bible study, and traveling the US and Canada in her 5th wheel with her husband. But her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Over the years, she devoted much of her time and energy to caregiving family members. She also worked for International Rectifier, Gay 90s ice cream parlor, and Taylor’s Drug Store. After the death of her first husband, Jeri married her high school sweetheart, Herman Morgan, on September 18, 1982. Jeri was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Schaeffer; father, Charles Flathers; mother, Virginia Flathers; and beloved grandmother, Maude Coen. She is survived by her husband, “Herm,”; four children, and their spouses: Verda and Paul Foster, Ginny and Guy Henn, Robert and Linda Schaeffer, and John Schaeffer; three step-children, Susie Mead, Michael Morgan, and Tim Morgan; three brothers, Charles Flathers, Jim Flathers, and Phil Flathers; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, monetary remembrances can be made to the American Cancer Society. • Marjorie Anne Newton Marjorie Anne Newton, age 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at home in Leesburg, Florida, with her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Kathleen Carr, at her side. Ma r j o r i e wa s bo rn in Perham, Minnesota. After graduating from college, she moved to California. Her most enjoyable career was in the 1970s as a Deputy Clerk in the Burbank California Courts. When Marjorie retired, she moved to El Segundo in 1990, which to her was the most memorable place she had ever lived. She was very active in the El Segundo Seniors group, volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce and Public Library. In 2003 she joined her son and daughter-in-law, in a move to central Florida. She is survived by her son Dennis Carr, daughter Donna Prentice who lives in Wisconsin, 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Marjorie really knew how to enjoy life and being with friends. She was a great example to everyone on how to live a full life. She always remembered to send a card on birthdays and holidays. Her beautiful hand writing and her “Love and Kisses” signature were her trade make and so fitting for such a sweet lady. She will be missed. Irish Dancer Competes in World Dance Championships Local RSS 5th grader Sophia DeGrazia and her team came home with two 2nd place and one 4th place medal in the girls U13 division during the 2015 World Irish Dance Championships held in Montreal, Canada over Spring Break. Sophia dances with the Claddagh School of Irish Dance with locations in Ventura, Lake Forest, Signal Hill, Simi Valley and El Segundo, CA. Lakers Sign Vander Blue The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Vander Blue for the remainder of the season, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released. Blue joins the Lakers from the team’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Los Angeles D-Fenders, where he finished second in the NBADL in scoring at 23.3 points per game on 47.3% shooting (41.6% from beyond-the-arc), in addition to 5.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game in 49 appearances (47 starts).
