The 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run begins at 8:00 a.m. and the 1/2K and 1K Kids’ Fun Runs start at 9:45 a.m., in front of El Segundo High School, 640 Main Street. All registered participants will receive race t-shirts and finisher medals. Both 5K and 10K courses are USATF certified featuring electronic chip timing where the overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers will receive race trophies. This year’s title sponsor is Big Five Sporting Goods. Participating sponsors will have expo booths in Library Park and the park Gazebo will serve as the event stage. The Run for Education is PTA’s largest fundraiser of the year, and expects to draw over 2,000 participants and raise $60,000 for our El Segundo public schools. The first El Segundo Run for Education took place on Sunday, February 23, 1992 and was made possible by the Center Street PTA Volunteers, the El Segundo Fire Department, Fireman’s Association, Explorer Scouts, El Segundo Unified School District personnel and City employees. Local merchants and businesses donated raffle items. This initial run included a 5K and 10K and attracted approximately 600 participants netting nearly $8,000 to refurbish Center Street Elementary School classroom furniture according to Pam Hodge, race director at the time. Congratulations to Drew, Carol and Don. I wish you all well as you join the council and tackle the many important issues in our city that need to be addressed. I also want to thank Marie Fellhauer and Dave Atkinson for their past service to our city. Being an elected official means making tough choices and they never shied away from doing what they believed in. Dave Atkinson should be acknowledged for his tireless support of Measure B. This will bring an important new revenue steam to our city and I urge our new council to spend it wisely. Finally, I appreciate the tone of this campaign. I think the candidates were respectful of each other and listened to the citizens and what our concerns are. It`s too bad there are a few folks out there that continue to make attacks and accusations of a personal nature. We don`t need that to get our views and opinions known. It points to an intellectual laziness on their part. Congratulations again! – George Funk Smear Campaign? I would like to assure Marie Fellhauer’s campaign supporter, Jenica Brigham, that I do exist. I am not “the same person” as Mike Robbins as she claimed in her insulting 4/7/16 Herald letter. Brigham attacked me, Mike Robbins, and others with childish namecalling and other baseless personal attacks because we reminded voters of Fellhauer’s record on City Council. She used personal attacks because she could not disprove any of our facts about Fellhauer’s true record. Brigham claimed the residents “think everything should be free.” In fact, we don’t want to be charged twice for the same things, such as $1,850+ fire department ambulance transport fees when taxes already pay for our fire department. Brigham described herself as “a young woman”, apparently to attract young voters to vote for Fellhauer. But at age 38, she hardly qualifies as “a young woman”. By 38, you’d think she would have registered to vote. She is not even registered to vote in El Segundo, at least not as of 2014. Another Fellhauer campaign supporter, Beth Schodorf, submitted a letter calling accurate descriptions of Fellhauer’s City Council record a “smear campaign”. Now who’s doing the smearing? Schodorf even defended Fellhauer by attacking Lou Kutil. That was a mistake. For many years Lou Kutil, an elderly resident himself, has volunteered his own time and money to drive elderly residents to their doctor appointments, wait for them, and drive them back home. – Marianne Fong Inherent Conflict of Interest The Police Officers’ and Firefighters’ Associations (unions) bankrolled the Measure B tax-hike campaign. FPPC campaign disclosure forms show the police and fire unions spent an overwhelming $39,247.50 in our city election ($19,033.50 police, and $20,214.00 fire) to influence voters on Measure B and the City Council race. This is nearly four times the $10,000 they contributed to the “Yes on Measure A” campaign in 2014, for eleven tax hikes, on residents and businesses. The fire union probably spent more than $100,000 on their Measure P campaign in 2012, to outsource our local Fire Department to Los Angeles County for a reduced level of service, for their own financial benefit. None of the firefighters and only about one-fourth of the police live in town. They campaign in our local elections to maximize their pay and pensions, and raise taxes and fees to pay for it, no matter how excessive and unsustainable. The latest available El Segundo City Employee compensation data, for 2014, at TransparentCalifornia.com, shows the 58 sworn police employees had the following total annual pay and benefits statistics: Minimum=$139,028; Maximum=$358,536; Average=$228,240; and Median (half above and half below)=$214,867. The 44 sworn firefighter employees had the following total annual pay and benefits statistics: Minimum=$148,235; Maximum=$375,524; Average=$247,646; and Median=$225,882. The firefighters are paid to sleep and eat, including some of those hours at the overtime rate of 150% their regular pay rate. The union campaigns have nothing to do with safety and everything to do with union greed. – Mike Robbins More Help on the Way Many thanks to the Voters of El Segundo for electing candidates last week to aid existing City Council members in continuing the positive changes started two years ago…well done El Segundo voters! – Richard Switz El Segundo High School Movie Night By Cece Jane Stewart On April 9, El Segundo High School (ESHS) hosted “Movie Night” showing the movie ‘The Sandlot.’ The PG movie was slated to show on the football field, however given the threat of rain, instead it was played on a large screen in the ESHS South Gym.  The event was open to ESHS students only and allowed students to set up blankets and beach chairs all over the hardwood.  The excitement of the movie was complemented by an array of movie snack options for purchase. Special thanks to the Lane family who donated all of the supplies for grilling hot dogs and burgers! The movie night was put together by the efforts of the Associated Student Body (ASB), and was held this year in lieu of the Sadie Hawkins dance.  Prior to the movie beginning, there was an opportunity drawing to win a free burger/chips/drink.  And, there was a special screening of the DUDE. Be Nice video which featured ESHS’s beloved Chuck Schaeffer, who as you may recall, was honored last year by the ESHS baseball team for his commitment as a volunteer to ESHS sports for decades  ‪The DUDE. Be Nice project is a platform to inspire people to build a positive community by recognizing a person or group in a fun, creative and meaningful way. Check out the video here, it is so touching: dudebenice.com. Chuck attended the screening with his Dad.  Our community was honored to commemorate you Chuck! As the 7:30 p.m. show time grew closer, students streamed in to watch ‘The Sandlot,’ a baseball themed movie about a group of kids who play baseball together at the sandlot. Together they go on a series of funny and touching adventures. The movie has a good theme about friendship, drive and determination to do what you want to do. Students seemed to enjoy the fun of the night.  As an ESHS student, I really appreciate the efforts our school takes to provide the students with safe and fun-filled activities that bond us as a community.  The movie screening in the gym made for a fun Saturday evening for all. Next time, I hope the rain will go away and allow us to gather under the sky. •
