Page 16 April 20, 2017 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Eagles from page 5 Reitano started for El Segundo and was nearly flawless in striking out six and allowing no baserunner to reach second base. In four innings, she threw just 40 pitches to pick up her second win of the season. The Lady Eagles host the El Segundo Tournament starting Saturday. Next week they have two big Ocean League games—at Santa Monica on Tuesday and at home next Thursday to face Culver City at 3:15 p.m. The boys’ volleyball team is on a winning streak of five consecutive matches since taking its only Ocean League loss to fifthranked Santa Monica. With Steve Brandlin, Kieran McCarthy, Joe Kelly, Joe Karrer and Josh Palmer leading the way, the Eagles are 10-4 overall and ranked seventh in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 polls. The team is rounding into form to make a run at Santa Monica and a share of the league title. The two teams play their league finale at El Segundo on May 2 at 3:15 p.m. Before that epic battle takes place, the Eagles played Culver City on Tuesday and travel to Beverly Hills today. Next week, the Eagles travel to Lawndale on Tuesday and host Hawthorne next Thursday before hosting Santa Monica for the Ocean League title. El Segundo Little League Update This season has been great in the sense that no one team has dominated and all are very competitive. The Giants have a slim game-and-a-half lead over the Orioles. But when the playoffs start in a few weeks, the championship will be up for grabs with the league’s parity so close. Xavier Rice of the Angels leads the league with five home runs, with Cooper Gamble from the Giants close behind with three City Council from page 15 C e r t i f i e d a n d L i c e n s e d P r o f e s s i o n a l s handyman BILL’S HOME & APARTMENT MAINTENANCE CONTRACTOR QUALITY at Handyman Prices. The waters have been muddied.” Later in the meeting, Boyles explained that he was still an EDAC member with no thought of running for City Council when he engaged PSM’s services for his own companies because he was impressed with the firm’s work. “I’m giving them some acknowledgement because they did do a good job at really creating some awareness for El Segundo,” he said. Also on Tuesday, the Council heard an update from Technology Committee Chair David Froemke on that group’s recent efforts. Formed last summer and comprised of seven members who live and work in El Segundo and represent a broad spectrum of the information technology (IT) world, the committee now meets every two weeks. “There’s a lot of work to be done—it’s moving,” Froemke said, noting that he and his colleagues have heard from all the City department heads. While pointing to the strength of the staff itself, Froemke identified a number of challenges moving forward. The list includes replacing outdated software (with the Recreation and Parks Department in particular need) and avoiding expensive, last-minute emergency purchases; creating a game plan to prioritize the more than 70 IT projects on the docket; identifying technology that supports collaboration between departments while simplifying processes; enhancing security; building a new, updated website that is also friendly to mobile devices and tablets; and streamlining credit card processing, among other items. Froemke also mentioned ongoing projects such as fiber-connecting the east and west sides of the city (wrapping up in about 100 days) and changing, along with the rest of the South Bay, the police and fire communication system (about a year away). Froemke reported that the new Director of IT will likely come aboard in late May or early June, as the City continues to narrow down candidates. He added that the committee recommends “waiting for the Director to come in before deciding what the make-up of the department should look like” given the number of projects and amount of backlog to tackle. At the end of the meeting, Brann and Boyles volunteered to be the Council representatives on a new ad hoc committee that will address the issue of rising California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) costs. Brann, who brought the item to the Council, said the first move is to “quantify the situation here and then look at what our options are to deal with it.” Fuentes described the continually increasing CalPERS liability as “the most critical item facing the City.” During reports, Dugan provided an update on TopGolf—with news that the project environmental impact report had been submitted and comments received. Projected timelines call for Planning Commission review in May and June, with the Council vote in July. If approved, the golf course would be shut down after Labor Day so work can begin on the reconfiguration. In the meantime, some elements of the due diligence agreement await resolution—including the City’s desire for existing golf pros to be retained and for summer camps to be staged at the new facility. In a presentation at the beginning of the meeting, the Council recognized the 100th anniversary of the El Segundo Fire Department—a celebration that included a ceremony and parade at Fire Station 1 on Tuesday afternoon—along with a badge pinning for personnel who started in the last two years (including Chief Chris Donovan). The Council saw a video created by Engineer Jeff Gurney that featured a montage of images highlighting the department’s history in town. • See Eagles, page 20
