Page 14 April 6, 2017 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Japan Team from page 5 Japan and Germany faced each other in the other semifinal. In an historic meeting between these two teams, it is believed it is the first time they had met outside of playing in the Little League World Series. Kitasuna scored six runs on four hits and took advantage of two errors to take a 7-0 lead and went on to win 10-0. With the finals set between Extreme Select and Kitasuna, the ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by Cody Esphorst--the brother of Jesse Esphorst, Jr. Esphorst was a highly regarded infielder for South Torrance High School before his life was tragically taken in an automobile accident on March 7. In a show of respect for the family and Jesse, the Kitasuna players presented the Esphorst family with some gifts. The sales of tournament t-shirts will be donated in Jesse’s name to help fund a scholarship. The Extreme Select gave their best, but were not a threat to Kitasuna as the Japanese team went on to win 18-2 in a threeinning shortened game based on the mercy rule. Kitasuna banged out 12 hits and scored 12 runs in the first inning. Ray Ichizawa hit a two-run home run--one of five homers hit in the inning by Kitasuna. Extreme Select enjoyed a brief celebration when Ben Daniel and Ryan Higgins hit back-to-back solo home runs to make it 12-2 in the second inning. That’s as close as they would come, as Kitasuna scored six more second-inning runs on six The Waves’ Ryan Garcia dominated by tossing a three-hit shutout of the Extreme Elite. William Schodorf continues his dominance in the distance freestyle of 200/500 free while Slate Davis, Kyle Crist and freshman sensation Owen Hale have consistently performed well.   The girls’ team also won both matches with scores of 117-50 over North Torrance and 122- 47 over Torrance. Standouts included utility specialist freshman Dylan Chen.  She swam her specialties in the butterfly, backstroke and freestyle. Seniors Bridgette Allison and Jordan Dornblaser also had big meets. The frosh/soph girls brought home two victories as well to gain momentum entering league. The frosh/soph boys’ team is still struggling and is winless due to lack of numbers, but continue to show great improvement. The baseball team is playing this week in a tournament in Orange County.
