EL SEGUNDO HERALD April 4, 2019 Page 3 Community Briefs 28th Annual El Segundo PTA Run for Education The El Segundo PTA is proud to announce the 28th Annual Run for Education 5K |10K and Kids’ Fun Run, which will take place, rain or shine, on Saturday, April 27, 2019 through the streets of El Segundo. The 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run begins at 8 a.m. in front of El Segundo High School, 640 Main Street. The award ceremony for the 5K and 10K will take place at 9 a.m. near the gazebo at Library Park. The 1/2K Kids Fun Run will begin at 10 a.m. and the 1K Kids Fun Run will begin at 10:15 a.m. starting on the corner of Mariposa and Main. The El Segundo Run for Education is a full USA Track and Field sanctioned event featuring electronic chip timing with both the 5K and 10K courses. To provide each participant with a smooth and safe run, the PTA has implemented Starting Line Corrals in the categories of Elite Runners, General Runners, General Walkers and Walkers with Strollers so that similar-pace participants will start in the appropriate areas. All registered participants will receive race t-shirts and finishers medals with overall winners plus first, second and third place finishers in all men’s and women’s age groups receiving placement medals. For a fourth year, Big 5 Sporting Goods is the Run’s title sponsor. Participating sponsors will have booths at the Health & Fitness Expo located at Library Park from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., which is free to the public. The Run for Education is PTA’s largest fundraiser of the year and expects to draw over 2,000 participants. All proceeds will benefit El Segundo public schools. As a family-friendly event, the Run continues to be community-focused, inviting local youth sporting groups and local businesses to join in the race activities. The El Segundo City Council will select a new City Manager in May to replace current City Manager Greg Carpenter, who is retiring in June. It’s important for the Council to understand what the community wants and needs from the individual who will be leading the City of El Segundo employees. The Council is seeking assistance to answer questions like: • What are the important challenges facing the City of El Segundo and what skills are needed to address them? • What is the preferred method of interaction that you want the City Manager to have with the community and what are the important topics to communicate? • What qualities and traits do you believe are important for this person to possess? • What should this individual know about the El Segundo community? If you would like to participate in this community conversation, please plan on attending a Special City Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chamber of City Hall. – Source: City of El Segundo • Missing Networks Up North As a baby boomer I grew up with the three major television networks. Most millennials today would hardly know what those are and most of might not think we’d miss them if they were gone but, for DirecTV subscribers in the most northern parts of the California Coast that is exactly what happen recently. With eighteen months to go on our contract and with out any advance notice all subscribers to Direct TV on the Redwood Coast suddenly found themselves with out CBS or NBC. It’s been almost two months now and still not a peep from the folks at DirecTV (headquartered in El Segundo CA), as to what happen to two of the three major networks or what they intend to do to make us subscribers whole again. So if you’ve been thinking of leaving your cable company for DirecTV, I would suggest you think again. – Richard Salzman, Arcata CA • Letters Pizza, Pasta & More VALENTINO S Ample Seating Closed On Sundays!
