EL SEGUNDO HERALD April 4, 2019 Page 15 Sports from page 5 With a Kitasuna runner on first base, the Torrance Tsunami pitcher threw a wild pitch in the dirt that skirted away. The Kitasuna runner didn’t stop at second base when he saw the catcher make a slight hesitation. He slid into third base without a throw. As for their sportsmanship and respect, they bow to the umpire before getting into the batter’s box. They offer the same gesture before each game as they stand on their foul line and bow to the empty field before taking the field. As to their opponents, they offer a gift for each opposing player presented by the players themselves. And one of the most touching forms of sportsmanship occurred in the South Bay Pony team. A Kitasuna hitter pounded a ball off the leg of the South Bay Pony pitcher so hard that it knocked that pitcher off the mound. But the pitcher recovered in time to throw out the batter. What was so impressive was as the South Bay Pony pitcher was being carried off the field, the Kitasuna rushed to offer apologies and help carry his opponent into the dugout. Not far behind were Kitasuna’s medical staff and two coaches. The tournament featured two Beach City Baseball Academy teams, a team representing El Segundo Little League, one from Encino, a couple teams from Manhattan Beach, a team from Redondo Beach and two from Torrance. In the seven previous tournaments, a team from El Segundo had faced Kitasuna in the finals and this year would be no different. The Beach City Red team opened with a 10-1 win over Redondo Beach Sunset Little League. Mateo Heredia was 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored, while Logan Brooks had three RBIs. Spencer Love looked dominate on the mound for Beach City, striking out six. Beach City Red won its second game 10-5 over Encino Little League and advanced to the semifinals to face Pacific Coast Hardware, another team from the South Bay. PCH is Mateo Heredia had six hits for the Beach City Red team. made up of players from as far away as Long Beach and the winner would advance to the final. In a five-run first inning Heredia doubled, Walter Urbon and Reed Abrams walked, Dylan Garcia and Logan Brooks each had scoring fly balls to highlight the big inning. In the third inning, Brooks doubled and scored on Shane Huber’s RBI double and Logan Hudson had a sacrifice fly ball scoring Gavin McKinnon as Beach City Red took a 8-3 lead. In the fourth inning, Anthony Temesvory’s solo home run increased the lead to 9-3. A two-run fifth inning made it 11-3. Huber was on base on an error and McKinnon doubled. Back-to-back sacrifice fly balls scored them both. PCH added a run in the sixth for the final score. Beach City Blue split its games on the first day but came up short, losing to Torrance Tsunami despite a sixth inning rally highlighted by JR Gomez’s two-run double. In the second game, BC Blue faced El Segundo Little League and won a thriller 4-3. Gomez hit s two-run homer in the third inning to give his team a 3-2 advantage. In the fifth inning his RBI single scored Ty Baerger, who had been hit by a pitch, to make it 4-2. ESLL came up with a run in the fifth when Cole Knupher singled, stole second base and scored on a catcher’s throwing error to make it 4-3. ESLL faced a team from Manhattan Beach and was defeated 10-2. The South Bay Pony took a 5-1 lead into the third inning, but RJ Puffer’s 250-foot solo home run cut the lead to 5-2. The South Bay Pony came up with a five-run fourth inning and ESLL fell 10-2. The BC Blue team held a 5-0 lead over Torrance Tsunami in the third inning before Tsunami’s 8-6 comeback win. In the fifth inning BC Blue attempted to make its own comeback, but came up short. Trailing 8-5, Luke Bowen reached base on an error and Jacob Ortega pinch ran and later scored to make it 8-6. BC Blue ended up loading the bases when Nick Pervakis and Porter Robbins each walked, but couldn’t score when the rally was halted. Kitasuna defeated Tsunami 5-0 to reach the finals for the eighth consecutive year. Two Kitasuna pitchers combined to limit Tsunami to just two hits and a walk while striking out 10. In the championship game, Kitasuna outhit and outplayed BC Red and won 12-0. A three-run first inning and a five-run second inning by Kitasuna doomed BC Red. Kitasuna parlayed eight hits, two walks and three errors in those two innings and never looked back. BC Red’s offense was limited to singles by Walter Urbon, Anthony Temesvory and Logan Hudson. It was another great weekend of baseball in El Segundo under picture-perfect skies and weather. Look for Kitasuna to reach the Little League World Series. The team has enough hitting, speed, defense and two pitchers who throw in the 70s (that is equivalent to throwing 93 MPH). • Kitasuna scored 37 runs in the Eighth Annual Beach City International Tournament.
