Additional prizes from the LA Kings will also be distributed at the end of March for participating in their Royal Reader program. The children were most exuberant discovering the Top Class winners. Congratulations go out to the one class from each grade level that read the most minutes – Mrs. Plotkin, Mrs. Loye, Mrs. Barnstone, Mrs. Elder, Mrs. Voboril, and Mrs. Jesiolowski! These six classes earned an exclusive Super Soaker event in which students got to blast Richmond VIP’s with water. Interim Principal, Dr. Godbey, and teachers made a huge splash with the kids all in the name of reading! Dr. Godbey remarked, “Our Read-a-thon and Read Across America Day would not have been so successful without the tremendous support of the teachers, parents, and our community championing the love of literacy. We are also incredibly grateful to our Ed Foundation for their support of reading and literacy at our site.” Richmond’s Reading Specialist (funded by ESEF) put on these events and wanted to share, “The rewards certainly add to the motivation and fun, but the main purpose of the Read-a-thon is rooted in the fact that the sheer volume of reading – the number of minutes a student reads outside of school - is one of the best predictors of how well that student will read. The most important prize of all for our students is a well-fed brain!” • As part of Read Across America Day, children at Richmond Street Elementary got to soak their teachers with SuperSoakers.
