EL SEGUNDO HERALD March 24, 2016 Page 3 Obituaries Wilma Mae (Skipworth) Hancock (1925-2016) Wilma Mae (Skipworth) Hancock was born on March 5, 1925 in Jerome, Arizona and went home to be with the Lord on March 13, 2016. Wilma moved to Oregon at the age of fifteen where she met the love of her life Gordon Hancock, Sr. After a short courtship, Wilma and Gordon married on August 28, 1942, and began a family in Klamath Falls, Oregon. In 1956 they made their way to El Segundo, California, a town they called home for sixty years, where they raised four sons, a true legacy. Wilma was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a huge baseball fan, had a passion for and spent countless hours working on genealogy and always had time for a visit with family and friends. Wilma was preceded in death by her son Gary and husband Gordon, Sr. and is survived by sons Gordon, Jr. (Margie), Brad (Ann), Greg (Melissa), Jeff (Tammy), fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren with one on the way. Wilma touched many and will be truly missed. There will be a service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, El Segundo Ward, 1215 E. Why? Because everyone else does. My mother once said, if everyone else jumped off a cliff does that mean you have to? I’ve read the propaganda mailer that millions will go directly to the city’s general fund, for parks? Our streets? Services? Millions of city’s funds will first go to cover the police and fire fighters six figure salaries, next to the pensions, which costs the city more millions, the union’s members contribution amounts to only thousands. (source city records) The police and fire unions are supporting measure B so their raises and entitlements will continue to increase. (source city records) We’ve heard fabrication about financial harm inflicted by our city on these union families. Please explain the lifestyle these union members are forced to endure making $160,000 to $290,000 a year? try $15,000 a year from Social Security. At the candidate’s forum, a question was asked why El Segundo residences are being charged thousands just to be taken to the nearest hospital? Fact; last year the city collected over $800,000 for the transportation by taxpayer paid firefighters, in taxpayer paid vehicles. (Even the gas used was taxpayer paid) Some forum candidates stated, if the people vote yes on B they might, might? drop the transportation fee on El Segundo residents. The choice, financially extort the visitors of El Segundo or on its citizens. Vote for neither. Vote NO on B – Marc Rener Hooray for El Segundo Day On February 26, there was an El Segundo Day at the VA Hospital in Los Angeles. This was done by the generosity of the people, organizations, and companies. A special thanks to Drew Boyles for sending a truck and crew to take the donated clothing, Alex Abad for the lunch, Rotary for serving and the Lakers for sending some of the Defender players to talk and take pictures with the veterans. – Pat Gerber, El Segundo Cares TOT a Sound Business Decision The TOT has been part of LA County law for at least 52 years.  For half that time, the tax has been 12%, while El Segundo’s has remained frozen in time at 8%.  That’s 26 years the TOT in LA County has been 12% and 52 years that the County has been collecting a TOT.  Despite that lengthy history a recent letter to the editor decried the tax as a “trend”.  There is no place in a modern city for such archaic and ideological thinking.   The reality is that in order for our city to provide the level of services we do to the hotel guests, including police response to a recent increase in criminal activity at those very same hotels, we need revenue to cover it.  A small city like El Segundo (pop. 17000) cannot be expected to cover the needs of a transient population spread across 10 or more different major hotels with no added cost.  In that same letter to the editor the author pointed to Chevron as the preferred revenue source.  Chevron has no more responsibility to cover the added cost of infrastructure services for a transient population than the hotels have a responsibility to cover safety costs for a refinery operation. I urge my fellow citizens to vote “yes” on Measure B and seize the opportunity for El Segundo to remain competitive in business and city services.  It is time to let reality, rather than ideology, motivate our votes. – Kevin Walton Vote on Issues A recent letter advising “vote out incumbents” is based on a misguided grudge and distracts from the real issues: public safety, financial solvency, improving infrastructure, and the need for a strategic vision that balances our small town culture with the reality of a growing city. We urge you to vote for the most qualified candidates and not vote against incumbents because they once agreed that Carl Jacobson was not the most qualified council member to be Mayor. It’s ironic the “vote out incumbents” crowd is supporting Don Brann. While they can’t seem to forgive the incumbents for a perceived insult to Jacobson, they have no problem forgiving Brann for his aggressive role in attempting to outsource our fire department. Furthermore, given Brann’s commitment to Wiseburn Schools, his ability to prioritize the best interests of ESUSD in future negotiations with Wiseburn should be questioned. For El Segundo to remain fully independent with well-staffed and funded police and fire departments, more revenue is needed. Revenue will come from nurturing our business tax base and taking advantage of a reasonable ToT increase. It can also come from increasing the percentage of each property tax dollar allocated to ES. Although making this change is a long, difficult challenge, it’s one Marie Fellhauer has undertaken. The most qualified candidates are Fellhauer, Drew Boyles and Carol Pirsztuk. Fellhauer is an outstanding asset to El Segundo and should be reelected. Please do your research on real In Loving Memory Of Barbara Patricia Voigt March 17, 1939 – March 19, 2016 Barbara Patricia Voigt passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at her home in Prescott, Arizona. Barbara was born in Long Beach, California and always considered herself a native Californian. Following marriage, she made her home in El Segundo where she raised her four children; John Voigt, Douglas Voigt, Craig Voigt and Wendi Matchett (Voigt). She loved to cook, enjoyed traveling and loved all God’s creatures great and small. Barbara is also survived by her six grandchildren; Robert Matchett, Erin Matchett, Christina Voigt LeBlanc, Sarah Voigt, Cora Voigt, Michelle Voigt and, two great grandchildren. God saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, so He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, “Peace be thine.” • Correction Last week, in our City Council article, Jessie “Bobbitt” was incorrect. It should be Jesse Bobbett. We regret the error. H.
