I was repeatedly questioned, asked for identification, and harassed. They claimed a report of “suspicious activity”. Nothing of the sort happened while I was present, yet I was practically staring down drawn guns. My freshly printed bank receipt proved I had legitimate reason to be there. The encounter was most unsettling, and illustrates clearly why so much animosity exists in our small community. My long-held assumption is that the police here are impartial  professionals, not to be feared. Clearly, profiling is alive and well in “Mayberry by the Sea....” This ugly, deeply disturbing incident done to a long-time local resident makes me begin to think otherwise. – Kerry Kimbrell Letters Community Briefs El Segundo’s 30th Annual Arbor Day Celebration On Saturday, March 11, Tree Musketeers will host El Segundo’s 30th Annual Arbor Day Celebration. The youth-led organization originated with a group of 13 Brownie Girl Scouts who dreamed that anyone, no matter how small, could change the world. They launched the youth environmental movement we know today. Since then many generations of Youth Managers have steered the organization, including overseeing day- to-day activities, sitting on the Board of Directors alongside elected officials and entrepreneurs, and planning large-scale events. This year’s event holds significant importance, marking 30 years for Tree Musketeers and 30 Arbor Days celebrated in El Segundo where the organization was founded. Last summer Tree Musketeers expanded their Youth Management Team by six individuals. The entire group of youth ages 12 to 16 has been at the helm of planning the event. In addition to planting dozens of trees, the group will care for hundreds more along Trees to the Sea, where the group planted 500 trees on Arbor Days from 2005-2008. These trees are a green pollution barrier between LAX and the South Bay, reducing the heat island effect along the 1.2-mile stretch of asphalt of Imperial Highway and filtering water and air in the area. Each year a task force comprised of several community leaders unites to ensure the event goes off smoothly. This year’s significant additions include George Codero from Xceed Financial Credit Union and Corrie Zupo from the revitalized El Segundo Environmental Committee. This is in addition to Lily Craig from event sponsor Chevron, and multiple members representing various City departments. Student representative to the Board Alex Nilsson then gave her report, detailing events at El Segundo High as the District school year enters its final three-plus month. Superintendent Melissa Moore regaled the Board with information about an upcoming event at the High School in conjunction with the El Segundo Centennial Committee and the ongoing celebration of the City’s 100th birthday. El Segundo High graduate Jeff Cason was the main presenter--and as the main producer of the event, he unveiled plans for an October 7 fireworks spectacular themed “Celebrate” that will take place at the Main Street campus to honor the history of El Segundo. Board President Bill Watkins emailed prior to the meeting, “We are excited and honored to have ESHS selected as the site for the 100th anniversary of El Segundo event produced by Jeff Cason. This will be a wonderful event for our whole community, and it will be an event that everyone will want to attend.” An alternative option for the District’s 2017- 18 technology data center was next on the presentation agenda, with District Director of Information Technology Danny Gauna and the co-founders of VPLS (a District partner and premier technology solutions provider) taking center stage. John Minnix, Ted Mektrakan and Tim Mektrakan addressed the Board and detailed a plan to replace the District’s data center, which was termed “outdated, costly to maintain or improve and prone to frequent service interruptions.” The frequent outages involving the data center lead to service interruptions that negatively impact the students and faculty. Outages involving the antiquated equipment result in emergency response and overtime costs for IT personnel, as well as a decrease in the service level to students and teachers. Two options were broached by Minnix, the main presenter. Option 1 would build the new data center at the District Office. Pros mentioned to this plan included that the new See School Board, page 14
