Page 6 February 11, 2016 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Eagles from page 5 bond between her Eagle teammates and she will be the hardest thing and will most likely miss the most. This Montana State University recruit was an All-Ocean League first team selection as a junior and selected as the Most Out Standing Player of the Ocean League and second team All-South Bay this past season. Stephen Moye could be the poster child for the ‘Boy Next Door’. This 6’7” middle blocker for the Eagle’s CIF champion volleyball team is looking forward to his senior year with his friends and perhaps play for another CIF ring. This four-year starter, who was named CIF Player of The Year, says that the most memorable moment so far in his high school career was being down two games in the best of three to Quartz Hills in the CIF Finals; and coming back to win it all. Moye, who hopes to get his Biology degree, will attend Stanford, one of the nation’s top collegiate volleyball program. His size, power and keen leadership skills will be an added benefit for the Cardinal currently ranked sixth in the nation. The fact that Nayeli Diaz is smidge over five foot-two doesn’t lesson the fact that she is one of the South Bay’s best softball catchers. This will be her fourth year playing for coach Keith Cameron and she has relished every moment. She calls her teammates sisters and says they are family on and off the field. Diaz has that infectious smile but behind that those pearly whites is a competitive player both in the classroom and on the field. She says the most gratifying thing is throwing out someone trying to steal a base on her. For her great year she was selected ass the Ocean League’s top catcher. Diaz says the high school memory that stands out the most so far is defeating Orange Lutheran, the sixth rank team in the nation at the time, in the San Luis Obispo Tournament and then winning it. She says the family atmosphere with she and her teammates celebrating afterwards was an emotional one. Taylor Armijo is one of those rare studentathletes who didn’t get noticed on the playing field with her high school teammates but rather playing for travel and club teams her junior year. She played for El Segundo her freshman and sophomore seasons but wanted to concentrate on getting quicker so she participated in track. This switch-hitting outfielder, who will attend St Lawrence University which is in Canton, New York, says her memorable moments of high school is being with her friends and the bus rides they took. Julie Roach is another four-year starter for Keith Cameron’s softball team. This alleverything first baseman has the power that Arizona Western is looking for. Julie, who will study Special Education, has a distinguished resume of accomplishments for the Eagles such as an all league selection for the past two seasons. The Lady Matadors will love having Julie in the lineup especially with her homerun hitting ability. She’s hit eight homeruns each of the past two seasons and looks to added to that number this season. With Julie’s winning attitude she’ll fit into a program that has averaged 42 wins per season the past three years. Julie’s tape-measure homerun power can be monstrous. She has blasted homeruns onto Stevenson Field with regularity. But the homerun she remembers most is the one against Burbank’s Caitlyn Brooks. Brooks had struck out Julie four times before getting one more chance at the fire-balling pitcher. She sent a fastball deep onto Stevenson Field that landed in the shortstop area or an estimated 375 feet away. Allison Tatnall is a five tool softball player that Arizona State will gladly open their arms to. Allison is articulate in every sense of the word with that Magic Johnson patent smile. Her course of study will be pre-med which gives you an indication on how successful she has been in the classroom. But her achievements on the softball field have been just as strong. This will be her fourth year as a starter roaming the outfield and she’s looking forward to getting her ‘family’ of teammates deeper in the playoffs this season. Allison had a breakout sophomore year when she was selected to the All-Pioneer League and All-South Bay teams. She followed that up with gaining all-league, All-South Bay and All-CIF as a junior. But what she says she’s most proud of isn’t the awards but rather being an Eagle for four years and her family of teammates. “We’re a family and we’ll always have each other now and in the future. If the whole team isn’t having fun then none of us are,” she says. Alyssa Pelegrin is another four-year starter for the softball team. She has been on Oregon State’s radar since her sophomore year so where else would she go. If Pelegrin’s athletic prowess looks familiar its because she is a relative of Alberto Concepcion, arguably one of the greatest hitters not only in El Segundo high school history but perhaps California Concepcion hit twenty homeruns including six in six consecutive at bats and had 72 RBIs his senior year. Pelegrin has had a wonderful high school career earning All- South Bay honors once and all-league status twice as a third baseman. It’s the offense power she generates that had the Beavers courting her. She says that her walk off homerun against Torrance was a highlight so far but the real highlight and memories she has is playing alongside her friends for four years. “That’s what I’ll miss the most but I do get chance to see Allison (Tatnall) when face each other in the PAC-12 games.” So now you get an idea that not only are these well rounded student-athletes ready to conquer the world in another year but that our world is in capable hands. Finally, where would these eight be without the support and guidance from their parents. I suppose these are the special ones we should be thanking for our future. • Manning from page 5 As for Manning, it may take a while to get official word of his retirement. “I’ll take some time to reflect,” he told CBS’s Tracy Wolfson after the game. “I’m going to kiss my wife and kids, I want to hug my family, and I’m going to drink a lot of Budweiser tonight, I promise you that.” Naturally, Manning wouldn’t announce retirement right after the game and take all of the attention away from his team, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Budweiser tastes so good that he drinks just a little bit more of it than normal come next season. Just two years ago, the Broncos took a 43-8 spanking at the hands of the Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Last Sunday, the team acquired its third championship in franchise history. • Sebastian Hebert made a big contribution in wins against Culver City and Hawthorne. Eli Chaney helped his team to wins over Culver City and Hawthorne. Ani Finau had 16 rebounds against Hawthorne.
