Landon Aubert breaks away on his way to scoring one of his three goals for the Classic Kings.
With time running out on the Flying Tigers,
they pulled McRoberts from goal in an attempt
to close their 5-3 deficit. Their shots on goal
at Andrew Paxon were deflected and saved by
the Black Widow goalie. Avalos then took a
long pass from Nair and scored on an empty
net to make it 6-3. With 1:32 remaining in
regulation, Carter King’s goal closed the gap
for the Flying Tigers to make it 6-4 and the
Black Widows hung on for the win.
The Black Widows’ defense was stellar,
thanks in part to Hawk Sanders, Aksel
Thomas and Peter Carr. The Flying Tigers
had some great play from Cole Davidson,
Mikey Lambert and Noah Forthurber.
Squirt Division Rue Jackets
vs. Classic Kings
The Classic Kings enjoyed a very strong
year, going undefeated heading into the last
two games of the season. Perfection was not
to be when they did some experimenting and
were defeated in the last two games, losing
to the Kings and then Rue Jackets in the
season finale. Then the Classic Kings defeated
the Kings and moved on to the championship
game where they would face the Rue
Jackets. The Rue Jackets were coming off a
great playoff game in which six out of their
seven players scored. Only goalie Samantha
Morales-Diaz was held out of the scoring
column. With both teams playing at the top
of their game, this was set up for an epic
battle between the division’s top two teams.
This would be a game controlled at the net.
The Rue Jackets were relentless on their attack
on goal, but Classis Kings goalie Jacob Light
was a wall throughout the game in making
25 saves. The result was a 6-3 Classic Kings
win to complete their championship run.
The Rue Jackets weren’t intimidated by
their counterparts and scored first. Jaiden
Rico, who helped lead the Blue Lightening
to the championship game last season, scored
five minutes into the game with an assist
from Andrew Morales-Diaz to give the Rue
Jackets a 1-0 lead. The Classic Kings took
advantage of a power play when Connor
Hitzig broke through to even the score. Two
minutes later, Hitzig stole the puck and went
on a breakaway to score on a dazzling shot
from in close.
The Rue Jackets scored consecutive goals
to take a 3-2 lead. Rico’s athleticism was
evident with his passing skills. He led Ayden
Loiacano, who timed the pass perfectly and
pushed it into the net. Ricky Walker showed
his passing skills when he stole the puck
deep on defense and fed Rico, who went the
distance for the score. Before halftime, the
Classic Kings evened the score when Ellee
Mueller fed Landon Aubert a pass inside
and the latter slid the puck past Rue Jackets
goalie Samantha Morales-Diaz.
In the second half, the Classic Kings’
defense and interruption of passing lanes
helped shut down the Rue Jackets. The Classic
Kings took the lead three minutes into
the second half on Aubert’s unassisted score.
Four minutes later, Aubert took a pass from
Hitzig with another score. The Classic Kings
would score another goal with less than five
minutes remaining to ice the game.
The Classic Kings’ defense was helped
along with the play of Mason Smith, Brendan
Wilson, and Zach and Samantha Patterson,
while Lucas Loiacano helped set up two
scoring passes. The Rue Jackets were led
defensively by goalie Morales-Diaz, who made
12 saves. She got plenty of help in front of
the goal from Riley Abrams, while Brayden
Vanek had some great passes on offense.
Pee Wee Division Whitehawks
vs. Classic Kings
The Whitehawks won an exciting overtime
playoff game 8-6 over the Vigilantes
to advance to the championship game. The
Whitehawks had balanced scoring from five
different players in the win to advance to the
championship.
In the championship game, the Whitehawks
trailed 5-2 at halftime only to make a brilliant
comeback in the second half to win 8-6. It
was a minor miracle with three of their goals
coming off of short-handed power plays.
Noah Poinsettia-Yoshida led the Whitehawks
with four goals, including two of the crucial
short-handed plays. Austin Kehl, who was
playing in his third consecutive championship
game, led the Classic Kings with two goals
and two assists.
Girls Water Polo Looks
to Run Ocean League
The Eagles swept past Beverly Hills 19-0
and Torrance 19-2 to improve their record to
16-8 on the season. Against Beverly Hills,
Christina Mullane had five goals, Claire
Lindsey four and Maya Weiss three. Jenna
Olson, Christina Grenke and Tyler Marcel
had two goals each and Emily Wilkinson
had one goal. The defense was so good that
it allowed no shots on goal -- a first for the
program.
Lindsey had six goals to lead her team
against Torrance. Mullane scored four goals,
Wilkinson added three, and Olivia Pederson
and Olson netted two each. Tyler Marcel
and Maya Weiss also each chipped in one
goal. Sophia Caravello and Kaitlin Rourke
split time in the cage with Caravello picking
up three saves in the first half and Rourke
six saves in the second half.
The Eagles look to finish off their Ocean
League championship run today at home at
3 p.m. A win would give El Segundo High
a perfect 8-0 record and first Ocean League
title in years. •
