EL SEGUNDO HERALD January 31, 2019 Page 11 Eagles from page 6 Eagles continued their speedy offense and used their passing to score four more goals -- including three by Jenna Olson and one by Christina Grenke. The defense was aggressive and that helped goalie Sophia Caravello, who made seven saves The Eagles traveled to Santa Monica yesterday to meet the eighth-ranked Vikings. A win by El Segundo would give the Eagles the Ocean League championship. A loss would split the title between the Eagles and Samo. Either way, the Eagles will enter the playoffs next week as the number one team from the Ocean League. Girls Soccer Team Close to Playoff Berth The Lady Eagles are in a dogfight in the Ocean League. With two remaining games they would need to sweep their games against Lawndale on Monday and Santa Monica yesterday. If that occurs, they would finish 7-3 and most likely finish in a tie for second place with a good chance of advancing to the CIF playoffs. They took care of defeating Beverly Hills, the top team on the standings, 2-1. The Eagles got first half goals from sophomore midfielders Natacha Lee and freshman Michaela Turner. In the second half the Eagles had their opportunities, but came away empty. The defense was solid and Liliana Romero came up with seven saves. The Normans’ only score came midway through the second half by Yasmin Kamara. In a pivotal Ocean League match-up against Culver City, the Eagles were shut out 3-0. They fought hard, but came away emptyhanded each time they were in position to score. Jones and Lynch Hurt Against Culver City The Eagles’ automatic CIF Southern Sec- Film Review from page 5 wheel feels a bit disorienting.  The fallout of this moment leads the movie to make a statement that we didn’t know it would have to make. Yet for this slight distraction, it would be wrong to not also acknowledge the number of complex ideas, all stylized through Johnson’s artistic formats. It’s no wonder why HBO bought the film from A24 hours before the movie made its world premiere at the Sundance festival. Native Son will be available to stream on HBO later this year. Honey Boy, Directed by Alma Har’el As the movie portrays in its very meta ways, Honey Boy started as a therapeutic tool when Shia LaBeouf was in rehab for alcohol abuse. For an artist so taken by postmodern art performance, how else would that person, who spent his life at the center of the entertainment industry, channel his pain but by confronting issues in the form of writing a screenplay that features his life’s story? i chronicles two moments in the life of this Shia-surrogate, Otis. There’s the child star (Noah Jupe) and the action star (Lucas Hedges) 10 years later. A life of physically demanding action stunts (“trauma reminders,” as his therapist later classifies), mixed with a propensity towards alcohol abuse fueled by familial addiction, Otis inevitably lands in rehab. It’s here where, through therapeutic sessions with his probation officer, he is forced to remember his childhood. This is where the film alternates between present and past lives. As young Otis, Jupe (A Quiet Place) is put into very adult situations – drugs and booze and older women (FKA Twigs) are very much present at the extended stay motel where he is being raised. Throughout this film, Jupe maintains a strength and innocence that makes his performance both solid and moving. Hedges channels everything from the screenwriter’s manic instability to his trademark combat boots. And portraying his former rodeo clown father, Shia as James embodies the character so fully that it’s more than just pretending – he’s channeling something real in himself and it’s his most lived-in and best role in a while. What lifts Honey Boy to even greater heights is how the film integrates the vaudeville choreography of James’ rodeo clown life. What’s seen in some scenes as hokey, in other parts is set to music to create magically mimed moments. Har’el captures this and all of the scenes between young Otis and his father so intimately. But it’s LaBeouf who gives himself over so completely to this emotionally gutting process, putting his singularly pained childhood onto the big screen in what feels like an act for emotional salvation. And while he said during the film’s Q&A following the screening that this was a “selfish” work, to make a movie for his own personal catharsis, Honey Boy is so raw and risk-taking that it provides a very personal experience for anyone who sees it. Honey Boy is currently awaiting distribution. • Ryan Rojas. tion 4AA Division playoff berth took a hit when they were swept by Beverly Hills and Culver City. El Segundo had some highlights against Beverly Hills, including scoring the first six points before the Normans rattled off the next 26 points to go on for the win. Elijah Mark muscled a rebound and put back a layup to stop the scoring streak. Leo Cagan, Robby Pederson and Michael Lynch each had three-pointers and the team never gave up throughout the contest. The Eagles had an opportunity to knock off Culver City, but injuries and playing shorthanded was one reason El Segundo fell 63-48. This was a game that was much in doubt until the fourth quarter. Four-year starter Lynch injured his ankle midway through the first quarter and was sidelined for the remainder of the game. Still, the rotation head coach David March utilized was working. Dylan Aubert’s three-pointer gave the Eagles a 10-point lead in the third quarter. Miles Jones’ season may have come to an end a couple minutes later. The four-year Eagle starter had just fed Mark on backto= back jumpers for a 31-22 lead. He then had a layup opportunity go awry when he was pushed from behind, with no call by the official, and he landed awkwardly to cause a severe ankle injury. With both Lynch and Jones sidelined for the remainder of the game, the Centaurs took advantage and went on to outscore the Eagles the rest of the way by 24 points for the win. The Eagles played Lawndale this past Tuesday and host Santa Monica tonight at 7:30 p.m. A win against either would most likely guarantee a ticket to the postseason dance as well as give the Eagles their most season wins in eight years. • Michaela Turner, center, goes high for a header against Culver City’s #27 Sierra Chabla and Brooke Dunlap. Ben Peterson plays tight defense on Culver City’s Amyas Njoku as Robby Pederson left) and Dylan Aubert come to help out.
