EL SEGUNDO HERALD January 12, 2017 Page 15 I’m more determined than ever to have a great life. Now I’m on a mission to find a new home in the new year. I’ve been told that I am pretty territorial, so I’m looking for a home that’s adults only, with an alpha owner to remind me who’s the boss. Also a quiet home, with not a lot of visitors. I’m very affectionate with my people and at 22 pounds, I’m the perfect size to accompany you wherever you go.” If you’re interested in Jack, please email info@msfr.org to set up an appointment to meet this little guy. He’s not very happy at our adoption fairs, so we show him by appointment only. “It’s absolutely amazing what a makeover can do for a guy’s confidence. I’m a 1.5-yearold, Jack Rizzo male purebred Miniature Schnauzer who was rescued from an LA city shelter. My name is Holmes (as in Sherlock Holmes) and I guess they named me that because my “pedigree” was a mystery. I was such a neglected, dirty, matted mess that I was hardly recognizable as a Schnauzer--it was just a guess. The shelter volunteers were so nice and took pity on me. They spent quite a bit of time grooming me so that I would be presentable and ta-da--here I am! They found that underneath that mess, the real me--a loving, energetic guy who likes other Eagles from page 5 Ocean League, play it was a game that started slowly but ended with the Eagles prevailing 37-26. Neither team shot very well, with just one field goal made in the first quarter. It was a testament to the defense the Eagles threw at the Wolves. El Segundo held its opponent to an awful 0-15 shooting in the first quarter. The only field goal the Eagles managed came with 28 seconds remaining when Kyle Freeman scored on a layup. In the second half, neither team had much of a lead because of poor shooting. What helped the Eagles was their foul line shooting in the game overall. They shot a season high 76 percent, making 16 of 21 attempts. In the fourth quarter, Kieran McCarthy hit a long jumper to give the Eagles their biggest lead at 30-23. Moments later Peterson made a block on the defensive end, raced down court and took an unselfish pass from Jacob Franco to score on a layup and stretch the lead to 34- 26. The Eagles went on to win 37-26. The Eagles started Ocean League play last night at Culver City and face Beverly Hills at home at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. The Normans feature a big lineup that includes the Lakers’ Ron Artest’s (Metta World Peace) two sons. Next week, the Eagles host Lawndale on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Eagles basketball team is a youthful blend of players who will be good with more experience. Still, they have played well to start the season despite a 7-9 record. With just two seniors on the roster, the Lady Eagles may suffer some setbacks in the rugged Ocean League when they face the likes of Culver City, Beverly Hills and Lawndale. Facing Ribet Academy for one final tune up before league play would be a daunting task. The Horned Frogs (12-3) are a CIF power and have eight consecutive winning seasons, including back-to-back CIF finals appearances and one title in that time. The Lady Eagles stayed within reach of Ribet before falling 48-43. El Segundo really didn’t match up well with a bigger and more physical Ribet team. To their credit, the Lady Eagles weren’t intimidated and showed their own tenacity. Trailing 31-23, Malia Hui drained a long three-pointer to cut the deficit. Then on the ensuing possession by the Horned Frogs, the Lady Eagles forced a shot clock violation. Unfortunately, El Segundo couldn’t take advantage of the turnover. In the fourth quarter, Hui connected on backto back three-pointers and Kailea Lee sank a free throw--but the Eagles still trailed 38-35 with 4:30 remaining. Lee drained a 26-footer to make it 40-38 with 3:51 left and Hue hit another long three-pointer to keep her team within 44-41 with 1:45 left. Down the stretch, the Lady Eagles were at the free throw line enough to match Ribet. They would sink the first one, but missed the second attempt. With 36 seconds remaining and trailing 46-43, El Segundo forced a turnover but couldn’t convert and wound up falling 48-43. Hui sank eight three-pointers and led all scorers with 25 points. The Eagles shot a miserable four of 13 free throws, which may have been the difference in the game. The Lady Eagles played at Culver City last night and hope to dethrone the eight-time defending Ocean League champs this season. El Segundo returns home Friday night at 6 p.m. and hosts Lawndale next Wednesday at 6 p.m. The girls’ water polo team has been working hard and steadily improving. The Lady Eagles are currently unranked in the CIF-SS Division 5 polls, but that could be changing soon after their recent play. The Lady Eagles played well in the 20-team Western Tournament and finished ninth. In the first game, El Segundo played at Etiwanda and lost 5-4. The Lady Eagles were down 4-0 after the first quarter and soundly outplayed their opponent the rest of the game, but couldn’t capitalize on opportunities at the end. In game two against La Mirada, El Segundo easily won 16-5. Jenna Olson went off with a career-high nine goals. She also picked up three steals and was able to draw a number of exclusions. Claire Lindsey added four goals, while Michelle Crew, Maya Weiss and Emily Wilkinson each had one goal. Isabel Romero was solid in the cage with seven saves. In the last game of the tournament against Garden Grove for ninth place, El Segundo played great defense behind 12 saves from Romero. Lindsey led the way with three goals, Jenna Olson, Emma Romero and Jordan Dornblaser each had one goal while  Emily Wilkinson chipped in two crucial second half goals. The Lady Eagles started their quest for an Ocean League title this past Tuesday against Culver City on the road. They return home next Tuesday to host Torrance at 3 p.m. The Lady Eagle soccer team rebounded after three consecutive losses to defeat Wiseburn 8-1 on the road. It was a much relief to get a big win heading into Ocean League play that started yesterday at home against Culver City. The Eagles won’t return home until January 20 when they host Hawthorne at 3pm. • Matt Hunkins slices his way through the Wiseburn defense for a layup. Wowser Schnauzers Holmes Zuzu We are looking for volunteers to help with our pet adoption fairs which are held every Saturday at the Petco located at 537 N. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach 90277, from noon-3: 30 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering and can commit to at least one Saturday a month, please contact us at info@msfr.org. You can also visit all of our Miniature Schnauzers & Friends rescues at the adoption fair or check out our website, www.msfr.org. If you have any questions about a particular dog’s availability, you can email us at info@msfr.org. Schnauzers! Bet you can’t adopt just one! “Even though my life hasn’t been a bed of roses, I’m not letting it get me down. Let me introduce myself: I’m Jack and I’m a five-year old, male Miniature Schnauzer. Initially, I ended up at an LA city shelter after being hit by a car. Unfortunately, my left eye had extensive damage and had to be removed. Obviously I wasn’t looking my best, so it was no surprise that there wasn’t much interest in adopting me. Then after I was rescued, it was discovered that my injury didn’t heal properly...so I had to have another surgery on my eye to correct the problem. I have to admit I thought I looked a bit rakish in my “patch,” but since I’m all healed the patch is gone. With all that has happened, dogs and loves to play--finally emerged. At 18 pounds, I’m still a lap dog who would make a great companion for your family.” If you are interested in Holmes, please email info@msfr.org for more information. “They call me Rizzo and just like the first baseman of the World Series-winning Chicago Cubs, I like to play ball! I’m a four-year old, male purebred Miniature Schnauzer who was rescued from an Inland Empire shelter. I was there for almost three weeks and no one was interested in adopting me and I can’t figure out why. Maybe it’s because I’m a big guy weighing in at about 25 pounds, but that’s the perfect size to play ball. I really am a great ballplayer. I can catch and run and you don’t have to worry about me getting underfoot! I’m super friendly and get along great with other dogs. I’m a good-looking guy and since I’ve had my dental done, my smile sparkles like a World Series trophy!” If you’re interested in Rizzo, please email info@msfr.org for more information. “Here I was out on a stroll looking at all of the Christmas lights and decorations when I got lost. That’s how I ended up at an LA county shelter just five days before Christmas. There I sat--no tags, no collar, no chip--waiting for my family to find me. What else could a two-year old, female Schnoodle (Miniature Schnauzer/Poodle mix) do? I thought I might find them at a supervisors meeting, where they do adoptions, but the event was cancelled so I was just waiting to go home. If the MSFR folks hadn’t been there to pick up another dog, that had already been adopted, I might still be sitting there waiting. I guess they couldn’t resist when they saw that my ears, paws, tail and beard all are tipped in a light brown. I’m just a bit of a gal--only 12 pounds--and cute as can be with my unusual markings, my sweet face and enchanting personality. They just had to rescue me and gave me a great new name. I’m now called Zuzu and I’m looking for a forever family to give me a wonderful life and to share all of the love I have to give.” If you are interested in Zuzu, please email info@msfr.org for more information. • Pets can get loose or lost through mishaps and travel quickly.
