Page 14 January 7, 2016 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Eagles from page 5 ranked teams in Hawaii. For the Eagles this was a bonding and business trip. For most of them, and their parents who went, this was the first time to paradise. There wasn’t much time to sightsee but during off her ball-handling skills the Eagles pulled to within six points before the Gators went on a scoring binge. In the fourth quarter the Eagles tried playing catch up but the Gators held off any type of comeback attempt. In another game El Segundo faced Moapa Valley a very different type of team than Green Valley. The pace was decidedly different which threw the Eagles off their game. Still, they cam away with a 32-19 win over the Pirates. The Lady Eagles went 2-2 in the tournament including one by forfeit. It was a challenge playing three games in two days but the experience of playing some top teams should benefit the Eagles as they begin Ocean League play next week. Paige Endo was once again named to the All-Tournament team making it a perfect record for the senior guard. Endo has been selected to each All-Tournament team that she has played in over the course of her four year high school career. The Eagles, who are 9-5 on the season, faced second ranked Mira Costa on Tuesday before hosting Bellflower tonight at 7pm. They’ll return home next Friday to host Beverly Hills at 6pm in the second game of the Ocean League schedule. • 24 Hour Service Since 1990 • Lic # 770059 • C-42 C-36 C-34 C20 A out our last two non-league games (Torrance at home and Rolling Hills Prep at the Fairfax State Preview).” The Eagles played Torrance last night. Henderson is a sprawling metropolis that spans the entire Las Vegas Valley. There are six public high schools in Henderson with an average enrollment of 2600 students. The host for the tournament was Green Valley the nineth ranked team in Nevada. El Segundo advanced to the second round after a default win over Cheyenne. The Eagles faced Henderson and were challenged from the start from an up-tempo team that has a rich tradition for being successful. The Gators have advanced to the Nevada Girls Basketball playoffs in the NIAA D-I Region for twelve consecutive years. El Segundo made it a game and stayed close before falling 77-63. Each team ran their offenses to perfection and the Eagles had no answer for the high scoring Gators who took a 42-33 lead at halftime. Ali-Watkins led the Eagles with 11 points while Mike Lynch had seven points. The Eagles faced Moanalua, another top tier team from the Islands in the third game and came away with 49-40 win. Ali-Watkins’ 12 points led all scorers but it was his defensive efforts along with Chaney and Ahloo that keyed the win. Sebastian Hebert had eight points while Justin Ostler had some key defensive rebounds. The Maryknoll Spartans are the fourth ranked team in Hawaii and for good reason. With five players 6’5 or better on the roster and a program that has a history of a deep playoff run most thought the Eagles would get run out of the gym. But Coach Ito’s squad played inspired basketball but fell in the closing minutes 37- 32. Josh Hessing led the Eagles with 10 points while Chase Ali-Watkins scored eight points. According to Coach Ito the trip was more than a success it was creating a connection and union for a team he hopes will get into the CIF-Southern Section playoffs next month. “ It was a great bonding trip which will be beneficial as we head into league and finish handyman BILL’S the time they were there they made the most of it. They did go to Waikiki Beach and Germaine’s Luau and created some memories they won’t soon forget. In the opening game the Eagles played McKinley of Honolulu. The Tigers and Eagles play the same tempo, are not very big and rely on setting up an opportunistic shot attempt. The Eagles behind the hot hand of Josh Hessing defeated McKinley 43-31. Hessing led all scorers with 14 points while Ali-Watkins had eight points and seven assists. Coach Ito knew facing Punahou in the second game would be a challenge. The second ranked Buff n’ Blue boast a front line that averages 6’5 while the Eagles tallest player is 6’4. The Eagles fell behind early and lost 57-40 to the host team in front of a large home crowd. Still, it was the first time the Buff n’ Blue had been held to under 60 points all season. Though the Eagles didn’t win the game it was a definite moral booster knowing they had held one of the top teams to their lowest point total all season.
